Chapter 9 - Justice Served

The sight of the Federal Agents and the seven-year-old girl entering the boardroom sent the entire executive committee into absolute chaos.
"Federal Bureau of Investigation," the lead agent announced loudly, pulling an official badge and a thick stack of federal arrest warrants from his coat. "Nobody leave the room. Put your hands on the table where we can see them!"
Victor Sterling’s face turned ash-gray. He made a desperate move toward the private side door near the executive bar, but Marcus moved like a thunderbolt, grabbing Victor by his lapels, slamming him face-first against the mahogany conference table, and pulling his arms behind his back in a swift, professional joint lock.
"Get your hands off me!" Victor screamed, his face pressed flat against the wood. "I am the CTO of this company! You can't do this!"
"Victor Sterling," the FBI agent declared, stepping forward and clicking heavy steel handcuffs around Victor’s wrists. "You are under arrest for attempted murder, corporate espionage, treason, illegal human experimentation, and the kidnapping of minor children under Project Nightfall."
"Project Nightfall?!" one of the senior board members gasped, his face turning pale. "What is he talking about? Adrian, what is this?!"
"Marcus, launch the presentation," I ordered calmly.
Marcus tapped his phone, and instantly, the massive 100-inch digital display screens lining the boardroom wall hummed to life.
Video feeds, chemical analysis sheets, bank records, and audio recordings began streaming across the screens in high definition.
The entire board watched in horrified silence as Dr. Sterling’s voice played aloud through the room’s surround-sound system, detailing the exact chemical composition of Compound X-7 used to keep me blind. Then came the encrypted telemetry logs proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that Victor Sterling had remotely overridden my car's steering column on the night of the Greenwich crash.
And finally, the screens displayed the secret Cayman Island bank accounts held jointly by Victor Sterling and Cassandra Whitmore, detailing thirty million dollars in advance payments from foreign buyers for the stolen bio-tech patents.
The room fell into an absolute, stunned silence.
Cassandra was trembling so violently she had to hold onto the back of a chair to keep from collapsing to the floor. Tears of panic and ruined ambition streaked down her cheeks, ruining her expensive makeup.
"Adrian... please..." Cassandra whimpered, dropping to her knees on the plush carpet in front of me, reaching out toward my trousers with shaking hands. "Please, darling... listen to me! Victor manipulated me! He threatened me! He said he would kill you if I didn't help him! I did it to protect you, Adrian! Everything I did, I did to keep you alive!"
I looked down at the woman I had once pledged my life to. Six months ago, her crocodile tears would have broken my heart. Today, looking at her with my own restored eyes, I saw only the hollow, pathetic desperation of a monster caught in her own trap.
"You told me people were staring at me in the park, Cassandra," I said quietly, my voice devoid of anger, left only with cold, absolute disdain. "You told me my behavior was making you uncomfortable. But the truth is... you couldn't stand looking at me because every time you looked into my blind eyes, you saw your own guilt."
I turned my back on her.
"Agent," I said to the lead FBI investigator. "Take her away."
"Adrian! No! Please! I love you! ADRIAN!" Cassandra shrieked as two female agents stepped forward, pulled her up by her arms, clicked the cuffs around her wrists, and dragged her kicking and screaming out of the boardroom.
Victor Sterling and his brother, Dr. Sterling—who was arrested simultaneously at his medical clinic twenty minutes later—were led out in chains alongside her.
As the noise of the arrests faded down the hallway, the remaining board members stood in silence, looking at me with a mixture of profound shock, shame, and newfound awe.
The legal council for the board stepped forward, his hands shaking as he adjusted his glasses. "Mr. Whitmore... Adrian... we... we had no idea. The board owes you an apology that words cannot express. The controlling shares... the company leadership... it's all yours. What would you like us to do?"
I walked slowly over to the head of the table, pulling back the massive leather chair where Cassandra had sat only minutes ago, and sat down.
I looked at Marcus, who gave me a proud, silent nod. Then I looked down at little Lily, who was standing beside my chair, her small hand resting gently on my knee.
"First," I said, looking out at the board of directors with absolute authority. "We shut down Project Nightfall permanently and turn over every single piece of research to medical facilities to help heal children across the world. Second, we rebuild this company from the ground up."

I took off my jacket, rolled up my sleeves, and smiled at Lily.
"And third... we're going home."
