Chapter 5 - Healing Wounds, Building Bridges

Over the next two weeks, Room 412 transformed into a makeshift home. William had arranged for private medical care, moving Esther from the standard recovery ward into a luxury VIP recovery suite on the top floor of the hospital. The room featured hardwood floors, large panoramic windows overlooking the city skyline, a comfortable seating area for Grace, and fresh lilies delivered every morning.
Dr. Evans walked in with his clipboard during morning rounds, a satisfied grin on his face.
“Well, Esther, your blood work has improved dramatically. Your strength is coming back faster than we anticipated, thanks to proper nutrition and, I suspect, a lot of emotional peace,” Dr. Evans said, checking her chart. “If you keep this up, we can look at discharging you by this weekend.”
Grace, who was sitting on the plush window seat coloring in a massive sketch pad William had bought her, dropped her crayon and spun around. “Does that mean Mama can come home to the big house?”
Dr. Evans chuckled. “It certainly does, young lady.”
Grace let out a triumphant cheer, doing a little dance on the cushion.
William, who had been sitting in an armchair reviewing corporate restructuring documents on his tablet, set the device aside and smiled warmly. “Did you hear that, Esther? The big house is waiting for you. My team has already cleared out the east wing, repainted your old rooms, and set up a brand-new nursery-style bedroom for Grace right next to the master suite.”
Esther looked down at her hands, a sudden wave of hesitation washing over her face. “William… are you sure? Your world… high society, the boards of directors, the media… won’t they talk? Won’t your mother’s allies try to make things difficult?”
William stood up, walked over to the bed, and sat down beside her, gently lifting her chin so she had to look into his eyes.
“Let them talk,” William said firmly. “For ten years, I lived in a world dictated by my mother’s rules, and it brought me nothing but emptiness. You and Grace are my family. Anyone who has a problem with that can resign from my company and step out of my life today. I spent a decade mourning a ghost, Esther. I am not about to let anyone take you away from me a second time.”
Esther’s heart melted. She reached up, wrapping her arms around his neck and pulling him into an embrace. William held her tight, burying his face in her shoulder, feeling the steady, healthy beat of her heart against his own.
Grace, deciding she was missing out on the action, scrambled off the window seat and launched herself onto the bed, wrapping her small arms around both of them.

“Group hug!” Grace giggled.
William laughed, pulling his daughter in as well, realizing that no amount of wealth or corporate power could ever compare to the simple, perfect warmth of this moment.
