Chapter 8 - Legacies Reborn

Two years later, the name Moretti meant something entirely different in Atlantic City.

While Luca still maintained control over the city’s major legal enterprises—the shipping docks, the real estate developments, and the hospitality unions—he had systematically severed ties with the underground gambling syndicates and illegal auctions. The warehouse on Pier 42 had been torn down, replaced by a modern community center and a children’s park overlooking the bay.

The transition hadn't been easy, but Luca’s fierce response to the New York families two years prior had left no one in doubt: he was untouchable, and his decisions were absolute.

Claire stood in the grand lobby of the Rose Bennett Memorial Clinic, a state-of-the-art medical facility in the heart of Atlantic City that provided free healthcare to victims of domestic abuse and low-income families. As the head nurse of the facility, Claire wore her white scrubs with immense pride. The clinic was funded entirely by the Moretti Foundation, a legitimate charitable organization Luca had established to honor both Claire’s grandmother and his own mother.

“Nurse Bennett, we have the final equipment reports ready for your signature,” Jenna Cole said, walking up with a digital clipboard, a bright smile on her face. Jenna was now the clinic’s administrative director, her life completely transformed from her days at the Velvet Room.

“Thank you, Jenna. Put them on my desk. I’m just waiting for my family,” Claire smiled, looking out the glass doors.

A sleek black SUV pulled up to the curb. The door opened, and a two-year-old boy with thick, dark curls and bright gray eyes tumbled out, running toward the clinic entrance.

“Mama! Mama!” Leo cheered, his tiny sneakers squeaking against the polished floorboards.

Claire knelt down, catching him in her arms and lifting him into a big hug. “Hey, my little lion! Did you have fun with Daddy?”

Luca walked in behind them, wearing a casual navy suit, his hands in his pockets. The pale scar on his temple was still there, a reminder of the past, but the coldness in his eyes had been completely replaced by a warm, deep contentment. He walked over, wrapping his large arms around both Claire and Leo, drawing them close.

“He wanted to buy out the entire toy store on the boardwalk,” Luca smiled, kissing Claire’s cheek. “I had to exercise some executive restraint.”

“I’m sure you did,” Claire laughed, leaning into his warmth.

As they stood together in the lobby of the clinic, surrounded by light, healing, and hope, Claire looked at their reflection in the polished glass doors. It wasn't broken like the mirror on Baltic Avenue. It was whole, clear, and bright.
