Chapter 8 - Awakening to Life

Forty-eight hours later, Brooke opened her eyes in the surgical intensive care unit.

The mechanical ventilator had been successfully removed, replaced by a nasal cannula delivering gentle humidified oxygen. The relentless, high-pitched beeps of the monitors had settled into a steady, reassuring rhythm.

Her father was sitting in the chair beside her bed, holding her hand so tightly his fingers were white. When he saw her eyelids flutter, he let out a choked sob of pure relief.

“Brooke? Sweetheart? Can you hear me?”

Brooke swallowed hard, her throat dry, and managed a faint, weak smile. “Dad… my leg… it feels… heavy.”

Daniel kissed her forehead, tears spilling freely down his cheeks. “You’re safe now, honey. The doctors saved your life.”

Dr. Kendra Wells walked in a moment later, holding a fresh chart with a warm, genuine smile. She checked Brooke’s surgical site, noting the clean, healing edges of the dressings and the stable color of her nail beds.

“Your white blood cell count is down to normal limits, Brooke,” Kendra said cheerfully. “The infection has been completely eradicated from your system.”

Brooke looked down beneath the sheet at the empty space where her right leg used to be. A shadow of grief crossed her features, but she squeezed her father's hand tighter. “I’m alive,” she whispered.

“You are,” Kendra said firmly. “And because you and your father had the courage to come back to this ER instead of listening to Dr. Keene, we were able to preserve the evidence before it was too late.”
