Chapter 7 - The Battle for the Core

The second surgery lasted four agonizing hours. Outside, Daniel sat alone in the quiet waiting room, the clock on the wall ticking away the seconds of his daughter’s life. He pulled out his phone and stared at the folder Dr. Keene had given them—the dismissive notes, the yellow warning labels, the arrogant signature at the bottom.
A cold rage began to replace his despair.
He didn't just want answers; he wanted accountability. He pulled up his email and forwarded every document, every ER triage record, every nurse’s note, and Dr. Keene’s official dismissal letter to a prominent investigative journalist he remembered seeing on regional news covering corporate medical corruption. He attached a single sentence: Dr. Malcolm Keene is murdering patients to cover up industrial contamination at Blackwood Ridge.
Back in the operating room, Harrison and Kendra were fighting a desperate war against time and biology.
The infection had indeed penetrated the deep fascial sheaths surrounding the hip socket. Using specialized bone saws and electrocautery units, Harrison worked with ruthless precision, separating the femur from the pelvis while Kendra managed aggressive fluid resuscitation and blood replacement.
“Vascular clamp in place!” Harrison announced, sweat pouring down his forehead beneath the surgical lights. “The primary source is isolated.”

Kendra tracked the lab values on the anesthetic monitor. “Lactate is starting to drop. Blood pressure is holding at 110 over 70 on minimal pressors.”
“We got it all,” Harrison breathed, leaning back for a fraction of a second as the final sutures were placed to close the pelvic wound. “The clean margins extend three centimeters into healthy tissue. If any bacteria survived this, modern medicine has failed us entirely.”
