Chapter 9 - Healing Old Wounds

The healing didn't happen overnight.
There were nights when Grace woke up gasping from nightmares of Vincent's threats, and nights when Dominic sat by the window, watching the street to make sure they were truly safe. But they did it together.
They bought a new house, far away from the city, nestled in a quiet valley surrounded by tall pine trees.
Dominic spent his days learning how to cook, how to pack school lunches, and how to read bedtime stories with different voices for every character—much to Noah's endless delight.
One evening, as Noah was sleeping upstairs, Dominic and Grace sat on the back porch, wrapped in a heavy wool blanket, watching the stars reflect off the snow.
"I used to look at the stars from that courthouse window," Grace whispered, leaning her head against Dominic’s shoulder. "I used to tell Noah that his father was a king who was protecting us from far away."
Dominic kissed the top of her head, his eyes burning. "I'm sorry I wasn't there."
"You're here now," she said, turning her face to look at him. "That's all that matters. The past is just a story we don't have to read anymore."
Dominic reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. He opened it to reveal a simple, stunning diamond ring—not a heavy heirloom of the Russo family, but a new ring, bought with clean money, representing a clean start.
"Grace Miller," Dominic said, his voice thick with emotion. "Will you let me be your husband again? For real this time?"
May you like
Grace smiled, her eyes reflecting the starlight. "Only if you promise to keep fixing those plastic train tracks."
"Every single day," Dominic vowed, sliding the ring onto her finger.
