Chapter 10 - The Warmth of Home

Eight Christmases after Dominic Russo had looked at his wife and told her she was dead to him, he stood in the kitchen of a warm, brightly lit house, wearing a ridiculous apron that said World’s Okayest Chef.
The smell of roasting turkey and fresh-baked cookies filled the air.
From the living room, the sound of laughter echoed. Noah, now eight years old, was running around the Christmas tree, wearing his signature striped socks, trying to catch their new golden retriever puppy.
"Dominic, the gravy is bubbling!" Grace called out, walking into the kitchen wearing a beautiful red dress.
Dominic caught her by the waist as she passed, pulling her flush against his chest. He kissed her deeply, savoring the taste of cinnamon on her lips.
"Let it bubble," Dominic murmured, his hands resting on her waist.
"Daddy, look!" Noah shouted, running into the kitchen and holding up a beautifully crafted wooden star. "I finished it!"
Dominic knelt down, looking at the star his son had carved with his help. "It’s perfect, Noah. Let's put it on the top of the tree."
Dominic lifted his son onto his shoulders. Noah reached up, carefully placing the star on the very top branch of the tall pine tree. The warm yellow lights of the tree reflected in the boy's storm-gray eyes.
Grace stood beside them, her arm wrapping around Dominic's waist, her head resting against his shoulder.
Dominic looked at his wife, then up at his son, and finally felt a warmth that no winter storm could ever freeze away.
