Chapter 8 - Unmasking the Culprit

With the legal battle finally over, the restitution funds recovered from the sale of Patricia's house were placed into a legally protected, irrevocable trust fund solely in Lily’s name, ensuring her education and future would be secured forever.
A few weeks after returning to Boston, I received an unexpected visit at my apartment.
It was Emily, my cousin.
She stood in the hallway outside my door, looking thin and anxious, holding a small cardboard box.
"Sarah..." she said quietly. "Can I talk to you? Just for five minutes?"
I hesitated, then stepped aside to let her in. Lily was taking her afternoon nap in the next room.
Emily sat awkwardly on the edge of my sofa, setting the cardboard box on her lap.
"I didn't come to ask for money," Emily said quickly, her eyes filling with tears. "And I didn't come to defend my parents. I... I brought these."
She opened the box and pushed it toward me. Inside were dozens of letters, cards, and small packages.
"When my parents were packing up the house before the foreclosure," Emily whispered, "I found these hidden in my mother's desk in the basement. They are letters you wrote to Grandma over the past eighteen months... and letters Grandma wrote to you that my mother intercepted from the mail."
I reached into the box with a trembling hand, picking up an envelope. It was a card I had sent Grandma for Mother’s Day two years ago, filled with photos of Lily’s first smiles. It had been opened and hidden away. There were also checks from Grandma addressed directly to me, marked "Return to Sender" with forged signatures.
"She kept us completely apart," Emily sobbed. "She made Grandma think you hated her and wanted nothing to do with the family, and she made you think nobody cared. I am so, so sorry, Sarah. I truly didn't know where my college money was coming from. If I had known, I would have stopped her."

Looking at my cousin's genuine remorse, the last lingering embers of anger in my heart finally dissolved into pity.
"Thank you for bringing these, Emily," I said softly, taking her hand. "It takes courage to face the truth."
