Chapter 6 - Rebuilding from the Ashes

Over the next six months, my life transformed completely, though not without painful adjustments.
Grandma helped me secure a beautiful two-bedroom apartment just three blocks from her home in Boston. She offered to let me live in her brownstone, but she understood my need for independence and dignity. She paid for a top-tier nanny to help care for Lily during the day, allowing me to finally finish my degree in Graphic Design—a dream I had abandoned when Evan died.
With peace of mind and stable ground beneath my feet, my passion for art revived. I spent long nights creating digital illustrations, building a portfolio that eventually caught the eye of a prestigious design agency in downtown Boston.
Meanwhile, the legal storm brewed in Colorado.
Patricia and Robert’s lives completely unraveled. Unable to deny the overwhelming paper trail provided by Richard and Clara, they were formally indicted by a federal grand jury.
My mother, Denise, called me frequently, crying and begging me to ask Grandma to drop the charges.
"She’s your aunt, Sarah!" Denise wept over the phone one evening. "She’s facing up to seven years in prison! They're going to lose the house! Emily had to drop out of university!"
I listened quietly to my mother's voice, feeling a strange sense of detachment.
"Mom," I said calmly. "When I was sitting in my dark apartment last winter with a feverish baby, calling you and Patricia for help, nobody worried about my house. Nobody worried about Lily's future. Actions have consequences."
"You've become so heartless!" Denise sobbed.

"No, Mom," I replied, my voice steady. "I just finally learned how to protect myself and my child."
I hung up the phone. It was the last time I spoke to my mother for a very long time.
