Chapter 7 - Trials of the Past

Progress rarely happens without resistance. Just as Sarah’s life seemed to settle into a peaceful rhythm, a storm from her past re-emerged to challenge her newfound stability.
One rainy Tuesday afternoon, as Sarah walked out of her design class, she was approached by a man standing near the entrance of the campus. He wore a rumpled coat, his eyes bloodshot and restless. It was Mark—Emma's biological father, who had walked out on Sarah three years ago when she was pregnant and her mother fell ill, taking what little savings they had left.
"Sarah," Mark called out, stepping into her path.
Sarah stopped cold, her stomach knotting with immediate alarm. "Mark? What are you doing here?"
"I saw you in the local news, standing next to David Vance at the foundation ceremony last week," Mark said, a bitter, greedy grin creeping onto his face. "Looks like you hit the jackpot while I’ve been struggling."
"Get away from me, Mark," Sarah said, her voice trembling despite her efforts to stay calm. "You abandoned us three years ago."
"I'm Emma's father," Mark sneered, stepping closer. "I have rights. Unless, of course, you and your billionaire friend want to make it worth my while to keep my distance. A hundred thousand dollars, Sarah. That’s nothing to Vance. Give me that, and you'll never see me again."
Sarah felt a wave of cold fear rush over her, but before she could answer, a calm, commanding voice shattered the rain's steady beat.
"She won't be giving you a single cent."
David walked up from behind, umbrella in hand, flanked by two sharp-dressed men in suits. His presence was formidable, his expression colder than the autumn rain.
"David," Sarah whispered, stepping behind him instinctively.
Mark sneered at David, trying to put up a brave face. "This is a family matter, Vance. Stay out of it."
"You relinquished your right to call yourself family the moment you deserted your daughter and stole from a dying woman," David said, his voice dropping to a icy register. "My legal team has already reviewed your history, Mr. Miller. Your outstanding warrants for fraud and unpaid child support across two states have already been forwarded to the local precinct."
Mark’s face went pale. "You're bluffing."
One of the men beside David stepped forward, pulling out a badge. "Mark Miller, you are under arrest for outstanding fraud warrants."
As officers pulled Mark away in handcuffs, shouting threats into the rainy air, Sarah stood frozen, her chest heaving as she tried to process the sudden turn of events.
David turned to her, holding the umbrella over her head to keep her dry. "Are you alright?" he asked, his voice instantly softening with genuine concern.
Sarah looked into his eyes, seeing no trace of the cold billionaire who had just brought down a bad man, but only the gentle soul who had returned her daughter’s sketchbook six months ago.
"How did you know?" Sarah asked hoarsely.
May you like
"I monitor safety around you and Emma," David said quietly. "I promised your mother's memory I would protect you. I will never let anyone harm you again, Sarah. Never."
In that moment, standing under the umbrella amidst the falling rain, Sarah realized that her feelings for David had grown far beyond simple gratitude. He was no longer just her mother’s legacy; he had become her rock.
