Chapter 4 - Shadows of the Debt

The morning light broke softly over the guesthouse, casting warm beams across the rich wooden floorboards. Emma woke up with a quiet gasp, looking around the spacious, sunlit bedroom in wonder. She squeezed her teddy bear and looked up at Sarah, who was sitting on the edge of the bed, watching her daughter with a peaceful expression Emma hadn't seen in years.
"Mommy," Emma whispered, "are we still in the dream?"
Sarah smiled, leaning down to kiss Emma’s forehead. "No, sweetie. It’s real. We are safe."
Downstairs, David was already awake, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit. A lavish breakfast spread covered the dining table—fresh fruit, warm pastries, eggs, and juice.
"Good morning," David said warmly as they entered. "Eat as much as you like. We have an errand to run this morning."
After breakfast, David’s private driver took them back to the old apartment building. The sight of the gray, cracked concrete brought back a cold spike of anxiety for Sarah, but David walked beside her with steady confidence.
They walked up the narrow stairs to the landlord's office. Mr. Henderson, a stout man with thin silver hair, was busy filing papers when they walked in. He looked up, his expression hardening when he saw Sarah.
"Sarah, I told you yesterday," Henderson began, rising from his chair. "I can't let you back into the apartment. The locks are already changed, and your things are stored in the basement."
David stepped forward, his cold, professional demeanor cutting through the room like steel. "Mr. Henderson, I am David Vance, CEO of Vance Enterprises."
Henderson froze, his eyes widening as he recognized the name that regularly topped the city's business headlines. " Mr... Mr. Vance? I didn't know... what can I do for you?"
"You can calculate Sarah Silva's remaining balance," David said smoothly, pulling a crisp leather checkbook from his jacket. "Including any late fees, administrative charges, and a full refund of her original deposit."
Henderson stammered, frantically pulling out his ledger. "Of course... let's see. Three months' back rent, plus building fees... it comes to two thousand four hundred dollars."
David quickly wrote out a check for five thousand dollars and slid it across the desk.
"This covers her debt and additional compensation for the inconvenience caused by her abrupt lock-out," David said, his voice quiet but commanding. "Furthermore, my legal team will be reviewing your building's eviction notices to ensure full compliance with municipal laws. If any irregularities are found, you will hear from them."
Henderson took the check with trembling hands, nodding repeatedly. "Understood, sir. Absolutely. Mrs. Silva, I'm... I'm sorry for the inconvenience."
Sarah looked at her former landlord, feeling no anger, only an incredible lightness. The heavy chain of debt that had pulled her down for years had been shattered in a matter of seconds.
"Collect her belongings from the basement immediately," David ordered quietly. "We have a new destination."

As they stepped back into the sunlight, Sarah turned to David, her eyes glistening. "You didn't have to do that with Henderson."
"People who prey on the vulnerable need to be reminded that the vulnerable are not always alone," David replied simply. "Now, let’s go see your new home."
