Chapter 9 - New Foundations

That evening, a private dinner was held on the outdoor terrace of the estate, overlooking the calm, blue waters of Lake Michigan.
Only a few true friends were present—Marcus Kane, who now managed security for the foundation, a few former maids who had been hired as head administrators of the new center, and Vincent.
As the sun sank below the horizon, painting the sky in deep shades of gold and crimson, Marcus raised a glass of lemonade.
“To the Maria Hartwell Foundation,” Marcus announced, smiling. “And to the boss, who finally learned that business is better when you listen to your heart.”
The small group laughed and clinked their glasses.
Vincent sat beside Lily, his glass resting in his hand. He looked at the woman beside him. Over the past months, he had watched her transform from a hidden, abused maid into a confident, compassionate leader. And in doing so, she had healed a part of his soul that had been broken for twenty-two years.
When the dinner ended and the guests retired inside, Lily and Vincent walked down to the edge of the terrace, listening to the gentle lap of the waves against the shore.
“What will you do now, Vincent?” Lily asked, leaning her shoulder against his arm. “The Sterlings are gone, the harbor contracts are signed, and the foundation is running smoothly. Do you go back to your shadows?”
Vincent turned to face her, taking her hands in his.
“The shadows lose their appeal when you’ve seen the light, Lily,” he said, his deep voice thick with quiet emotion. “For twenty years, I lived for debt and revenge. But standing in this garden with you, I realized something.”
“What’s that?” she whispered.

“Revenge tears down the world,” Vincent said, reaching up to gently tuck a lock of her hair behind her ear. “Building something beautiful with you… that is the only true victory.”
Lily looked into his gray eyes, seeing the depth of his devotion. She stepped closer, wrapping her arms around his waist and resting her head against his chest. Vincent wrapped his long arms around her, holding her tightly against the cool night breeze.
