Chapter 6 - The King’s Protection

The entire room watched in bewildered silence as the most dangerous man in the city walked past the billionaires, past the politicians, and stopped right in front of Lily Hartwell.
Lily looked up, her heart hammering against her ribs. She recognized him now—the dark-eyed stranger who had stood outside the conservatory glass the night before.
Vincent reached out. With infinite gentleness, his large, gloved hand reached up and unknotted the linen scarf covering her head.
The scarf slid away.
Lily’s uneven, hacked-off hair was revealed to the entire room.
A collective gasp echoed through the ballroom.
Lily flinched, instinctively trying to cover her head, but Vincent caught her wrist—not with force, but with a warm, steady support.
“Do not hide,” Vincent said softly, his deep voice carrying a quiet reverence that shocked everyone who knew his reputation. “You have done nothing to be ashamed of.”
He turned to his assistant, who brought forward the velvet-lined wooden box. Vincent opened it. Inside lay a magnificent crown tiara made of solid platinum, encrusted with over fifty carats of rare, flawless pink diamonds. It was an antique masterpiece, worth tens of millions of dollars—a piece history recognized as the Crown of Saint Petersburg.
Vincent lifted the tiara.
Before the eyes of Chicago high society, Vincent Moretti gently placed the royal crown upon Lily Hartwell’s short, uneven hair.
“A crown is not made of hair, Miss Hartwell,” Vincent announced, his voice booming with absolute authority. “It is made of grace, endurance, and dignity. And you carry more of it than anyone in this room.”
Clarissa gasped in horror. “Are you insane?! She’s a maid! She’s nobody!”
Vincent turned slowly, his eyes sweeping over Clarissa with pure lethargy and contempt.
“Her name is Lily Hartwell,” Vincent said. “Her mother was Maria Hartwell, a woman who worked herself to death to build the wealth the Sterling family sits on today. Lily is not a maid. As of five minutes ago, she is the majority owner of the Sterling Logistics Group.”
Andrew’s eyes widened in horror. “What?! That’s impossible!”
Marcus Kane stepped forward, pulling a stack of legal documents from his coat. “While you were preparing for your party, Mr. Sterling, Mr. Moretti acquired sixty percent of your company’s distressed debt from your foreign creditors. He has transferred full ownership of those shares to Miss Hartwell as restitution for past labor violations committed against her family.”
The ballroom erupted into chaos.
Andrew collapsed back into his chair, his blood running cold. Eleanor Sterling stared at Lily in shock, realizing that in a single evening, the dynamic of power had flipped entirely.

Lily looked at Vincent, tears finally spilling over her lashes—not of sorrow, but of overwhelming shock. “Why… why are you doing this for me?”
Vincent looked at her, his expression softening with a tragic, decades-old memory. “Because long ago, someone should have done it for my sister. And because you, Lily, deserve to walk tall.”
