Chapter 4 - The Eviction Notice and Legal Fallout

The next morning, the sun rose over a frozen Chicago landscape, but inside the apartment on Michigan Avenue, the atmosphere was absolute ice.

Daniel had driven back through the night, arriving at dawn with Maya and two armed security guards he had hired for the morning. He wasn't taking any chances with his parents' volatile tempers.

When Richard unlocked the front door to grab his morning paper, he found Daniel standing in the hallway flanked by security, with Maya holding a thick stack of official legal documents.

“What is this nonsense?” Richard barked, stepping back as the security guards moved forward with professional calm. “Daniel, have you lost your mind? Bringing strangers into our home—?”

“This isn't your home, Dad,” Daniel interrupted, his voice devoid of any warmth or familial respect. He looked older, hardened by the realization of what his family had done. “It’s mine and Claire’s. And as of five minutes ago, you, Mom, and Lauren are officially being evicted for breach of contract, illegal subletting, and domestic violence.”

Margaret appeared from the hallway, wrapped in a silk bathrobe, her hair still unbrushed. Her face twisted into a mask of pure venom when she saw Daniel standing against her.

“Daniel Dawson, how dare you!” she shrieked, pointing a shaking finger at him. “After everything we sacrificed for you? After raising you, supporting you through your education, treating that ungrateful wife of yours like our own flesh and blood—!”

“Shut up, Mother,” Daniel snapped, the sharpness of his tone making Margaret physically flinch. For forty years, she was accustomed to controlling every word that came out of his mouth. Now, her eyes widened in genuine shock. “I saw the video. I know Lauren stole your bracelet. I know you helped cover it up, and I know you deliberately tortured my three-year-old daughter to punish her for a crime your golden-child daughter committed.”

Lauren stepped out from the guest room behind Margaret, looking pale and terrified, clutching a designer handbag to her chest. “Daniel, I swear, I was going to put it back—it was just a loan, I needed to pay off some bills—!”

“Don't speak to me,” Daniel said, his gaze fixed on his sister with utter disgust. “The police are already downstairs, Lauren. They have the security footage, they have the pawnshop records Maya pulled this morning showing you tried to sell the bracelet yesterday afternoon, and they have a warrant for your arrest for grand larceny and child endangerment.”

Lauren let out a high-pitched gasp and stumbled backward, colliding with the hallway wall. “Mom! Make him stop! They can't arrest me!”

“You are going to jail, Lauren,” Maya stated coldly, stepping forward and holding out the official legal paperwork. “And Richard, you have an expedited summons for assault and battery against Claire. If any of you take one step back into this apartment after today, or attempt to contact Claire or Emma, the police won't just arrest you—they’ll throw away the key.”

Margaret’s face turned a mottled, furious red. She stepped right up to Daniel, her eyes blazing with blind fury. “You are choosing her over your own family? Over your mother who gave you life?”

“Yes,” Daniel said firmly, not blinking once. “Claire is my wife. Emma is my daughter. You are nothing to us anymore except a nightmare we are waking up from.”
