Chapter 10 - Happily Ever After

Years passed, bringing the gentle, steady rhythm of peace, growth, and unconditional love into our household.

Emma grew into a brilliant, confident, and joyful young girl who excelled in school, loved painting, and wore her long brown curls like a crown of pride. She never spoke of the dark days of her toddlerhood—the trauma had been completely washed away by years of safety, gentle parenting, and unwavering love.

Daniel and I built a thriving life together, expanding our careers and creating a home filled with laughter, open communication, and absolute trust. We never heard from Margaret, Richard, or Lauren again, and we never wanted to. They had chosen their cruelty, and in doing so, they had permanently exiled themselves from the only people who truly mattered.

On a warm summer evening, standing on the balcony of our home as the sun dipped below the Chicago skyline and painted the clouds in shades of purple and gold, Daniel wrapped his arms around me from behind, resting his hands gently on my stomach.

“What are you thinking about?” he whispered softly.

I leaned back into his embrace, watching Emma chase fireflies in the courtyard below, her laughter floating up to us like music on the evening breeze.

“I’m thinking about how lucky we are,” I said, smiling as I covered his hands with my own. “And how nothing in this world can ever break us.”

Daniel kissed the back of my neck, smiling against my skin.

“Never,” he agreed softly. “Our story is ours now. And it has the best ending of all.”
