Chapter 7 - Snowflakes and Promises

The six weeks leading up to the final trial passed in a high-stakes chess match played in the shadows.

Ethan Miller, backed into a corner and facing financial ruin, attempted to launch a public smear campaign. He contacted local tabloid reporters, trying to sell stories claiming Julian Carter was using his billions to "steal poor children from their rightful father."

However, Julian’s public relations and legal teams were relentless. Before a single dishonest article could hit the press, Julian’s team provided news outlets with certified court records of Ethan’s criminal history, gambling debts, and the recorded extortion attempt. The media narrative flipped instantly: Julian was praised across Boston as a protective guardian shielding an innocent family from a predatory deadbeat.

Meanwhile, away from the legal chaos, Julian’s bond with Rebecca and the twins grew into something indestructible.

In early February, Julian took Rebecca and the girls to his family’s private estate in the mountains of Vermont for a weekend away from the city.

The estate was surrounded by pristine white snow and towering pine trees. For three days, there were no lawyers, no court summons, and no fears. Julian spent hours teaching Ava and Norah how to build proper snowmen, pulling them through the powder on wooden sleds, and making thick hot chocolate with toasted marshmallows by a roaring stone fireplace.

On the final night of their stay, after the girls had fallen fast asleep in a room filled with plush toys, Julian and Rebecca stood on the wrap-around timber porch, wrapped in heavy wool blankets, watching the snow fall gently over the moonlit mountain valley.

"I used to think my life was complete," Julian said softly, his breath misting in the crisp winter air. "I had built a corporate empire. I had more money than I could ever spend. I thought success was measured in growth charts and balance sheets."

He turned to face Rebecca, taking her soft hands into his warm gloves.

"Then I met two tiny girls on a frozen step, and a woman who fought like a lion every single day just to keep them safe. And I realized my life was completely empty."

Rebecca looked up at him, her blue eyes shining with tears that reflected the warm glow of the porch lantern. "Julian... you saved us."

"No, Rebecca," Julian said gently, reaching up to frame her face in his hands. "You saved me. You gave me a home. You gave me a reason to care about tomorrow."

He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, navy velvet box. He flipped it open. Inside sat a breathtaking ring featuring an emerald-cut diamond surrounded by two delicate blue sapphires—representing Ava and Norah.

Rebecca gasped, bringing her hands to her mouth.

"Rebecca Miller," Julian said, his voice deep, gravelly, and full of emotion. "I don't just want to fight for your daughters in court. I want to spend the rest of my life building a world where you never have to be afraid, cold, or alone ever again. Will you marry me?"

Rebecca stared at the shimmering ring, then looked into the eyes of the man who had turned their cold, terrifying world into a sanctuary of love.

"Yes!" she sobbed happily, throwing her arms around his neck. "Yes, Julian! A thousand times yes!"

He pulled her close, lifting her slightly off her feet, and kissed her deeply while the snow fell around them like quiet white confetti.

From the upstairs window, two little faces were pressed against the cold glass.

Ava looked at Norah, a massive, gap-toothed grin spreading across her face. "Did he give her the ring?"

"Yes!" Norah whispered happily, clapping her little hands together. "Mr. Julian is really going to be our daddy forever!"
