Chapter 7 - The Shadow over Chicago

The kiss was electric, slow, and deep, carrying the weight of months of unspoken devotion. Beatrice leaned into him, her hands sliding up his broad chest, burying themselves in his hair. For the first time in her life, she didn't feel awkward, heavy, or out of place. In Leo’s arms, wrapped in his heat and power, she felt adored.

When he finally pulled back, resting his forehead against hers, both of them were breathing heavily.

"I love you, Beatrice," Leo confessed, his voice thick with uncharacteristic vulnerability. "I've loved you since the night I found you holding Lily in that damp cellar, bleeding and refusing to let go."

"I love you too, Leo," she wept happily, her heart overflowing. "So much."

Their joy, however, was short-lived.

Two weeks later, the tension between the Rossi and Moretti families reached its boiling point. A rival hit squad attempted to ambush one of Leo’s supply trucks near the docks, sparking an all-out war in the underworld of Chicago.

Leo knew he had to crush the Morettis once and for all, but he couldn't do it while worrying about the safety of his home.

"I'm sending you and Lily to our estate in Lake Geneva," Leo told Beatrice late one night as he checked his sidearm. "It's fortified. Nobody knows about it except Mateo."

"No," Beatrice said firmly, crossing her arms over her chest.

Leo paused, looking up in surprise. "Beatrice, it's not safe here. Moretti is desperate."

"I am not leaving you," she declared, stepping up to him. "Every time you walk out that door, my heart stops. If I go to Wisconsin, I'll go crazy wondering if you're alive. Lily and I stay right here. You bring your men inside, you turn this house into a fortress, and we face it together."

Leo stared at her, amazed by her fierce resolve. A slow, proud smile broke across his face.

"You really are a mafia boss's woman, aren't you?" he murmured, pulling her in for a fierce, protective embrace.

"I'm your woman," she corrected gently. "Now finish this."
