Chapter 9 - Threads of a New Foundation

Six months later, the atmosphere inside Rainier Crest Tower had changed completely.

The cold, sterile environment of corporate silence had been replaced by a culture of openness and community. Under Andrew’s leadership, the building’s staff—from the custodial team to the high-level executives—were treated with equal respect and dignity. Salary scales for support staff had been raised significantly, and a comprehensive childcare facility had been built on the tenth floor.

On a bright autumn afternoon, Andrew stood in his new office on the forty-seventh floor.

The room, once a dark site of corporate greed, had been entirely renovated into an airy, light-filled space with comfortable seating, plants, and large windows looking out over Puget Sound. On his desk sat a framed photograph of Marie, beside a new photograph of Leo and Emma sitting together at a park, laughing under a canopy of golden autumn leaves.

A soft knock sounded at the door.

Celeste walked in, holding two cups of coffee from the local café down the block. She set one down on Andrew’s desk and sat down across from him.

"How are the new security protocols running?" she asked.

"Smoothly," Andrew replied, taking a sip of the coffee. "The staff feels safe, the physical checks are automated, and we haven't had a single safety violation in three months."

"And Leo?"

"He loves his new school," Andrew said, his eyes glowing with pride. "He’s taking soccer lessons now. He’s terrible at it, but he runs faster than anyone else on the field."

Celeste laughed—a light, joyful sound that had become frequent over the past few months.

"Emma asked if he can come over to the house this weekend," Celeste said. "We're setting up a workshop in the garage. She wants to build a birdhouse, and she insists that only Leo and you can help her put the roof on."

"We'll be there," Andrew smiled.

He looked closely at Celeste. The lines of exhaustion and quiet agony that had once defined her face were gone, replaced by a deep sense of peace and purpose. Together, they had overcome their shared grief—not by forgetting the people they had lost, but by building a world where their children could grow up safe, loved, and heard.

"Thank you, Andrew," Celeste said softly, looking out the window at the blue waters of the sound. "For everything."

"You don't need to thank me anymore, Celeste," Andrew said gently. "We're family now."
