Chapter 3 - Whispers Behind the Seams

"Emma?" Andrew called softly, keeping his distance so as not to startle her.

distributional The young girl stopped. She turned, her small boots squeaking against the polished marble floor. When she saw Andrew, her posture noticeably relaxed. She didn't run, nor did she retreat into the shadow of the structural columns.

Andrew crouched down, placing his hands on his knees. "It's pretty late to be down here. Does your mom know you left the forty-eighth floor?"

Emma shook her head. She held out the blue rabbit.

The gray thread Andrew had sewn three weeks earlier had frayed slightly at the knot.

"Did it loosen up?" Andrew asked.

Emma took three slow steps toward him and held out a small pair of plastic craft scissors she must have taken from an office drawer. She offered them to Andrew, then pointed directly at the newly sewn ear.

Andrew hesitated. "You want me to open it?"

She nodded.

Andrew took the scissors, carefully snipping the thick gray thread he had placed there before. He gently parted the plush material and pulled out the folded slip of paper.

"Do you want me to read it, or do you want to hold it?" he asked gently.

Emma looked up into his eyes. Her expression was solemn, far too mature for an eight-year-old child. She reached out and unfolded the paper herself, showing it to Andrew.

It wasn't a child's drawing, nor was it a note of grief about her father.

It was a page ripped from an executive ledger, covered in tiny hand-drawn diagrams, dates, and financial figures, accompanied by a short note written in a hasty, trembling handwriting:

If something happens to me on the trail, look at the Northstar Fleet Registry, Account 904. It wasn't an accident. They knew the seals were compromised.

Andrew’s breath caught in his throat. He recognized the signature at the bottom: Daniel Kane.

Before Andrew could fully process what he was looking at, heavy footfalls echoed across the lobby.

"Hey! You!"

Two security guards came running from the hallway, their flashlights flashing across the dark lobby walls. Behind them was Director Vance, holding an iPad and looking furious.

"I knew it!" Vance shouted, pointing at Andrew. "You were explicitly ordered to stay away from the girl! Call the police—he’s attempting to manipulate the family!"

Emma immediately recoiled, pulling the paper back into her chest and ducking behind Andrew’s legs.

"Stay back," Andrew said, standing up and shielding the girl. "She came down here on her own. She’s frightened."

"Get away from her, Cole!" Vance yelled, stepping forward. "You're fired! Hand over your badge immediately, or I’m pressing charges for trespassing and child endangerment!"

Celeste Kane stepped out of the second elevator bank, her face pale, having followed the security alert sent to her phone when the top floor door was opened.

"What is happening here?" she demanded, her voice cutting through the lobby.

"Mrs. Kane," Vance said quickly, bowing his head slightly. "We caught this custodian attempting to contact your daughter again. He has been violating building rules and harassing her."

Celeste walked over to Emma. The girl did not move toward her mother; instead, she clung tightly to the back of Andrew’s work shirt.

Celeste stopped in her tracks, stunned by the sight. Her daughter, who had rejected every world-class therapist, every relative, and every attempt at comfort, was hiding behind a janitor.

"Emma..." Celeste whispered. "Come here, baby."

Emma shook her head, holding out the folded paper toward Andrew, as if begging him to protect the truth hidden inside it.

"Mrs. Kane," Andrew said quietly, keeping his voice steady despite the adrenaline surging through his veins. "Your daughter isn't mute because she's sick. She's mute because she's terrified. Her father gave her something before he died, and she's been keeping it safe."

Vance’s face visibly paled for a fraction of a second, a detail Andrew did not miss.

"That's absurd!" Vance snapped. "He's making up stories to keep his job. Guards, escort Mr. Cole off the property immediately."

"Wait," Celeste commanded.

She looked from Vance to Andrew, then down at her daughter’s trembling hands.

"Mr. Cole," Celeste said, her voice trembling slightly. "What are you talking about?"

"Look at the paper, ma'am," Andrew said. "Just look at what your husband wrote."

Emma slowly held the paper out to her mother. Celeste reached for it, but before her fingers could touch the page, the emergency sirens inside Rainier Crest Tower began to blare.
