Chapter 6 - The Desperate Ambush

Two weeks later, the pressure on Vance Logistics became unbearable. The company had lost three more mid-sized accounts, and the local news had run a segment on the massive shipping backlogs at the regional hubs, subtly hinting at internal mismanagement at the legacy firm.
Julian was walking out of a high-end toy store downtown, carrying a large bag of art supplies for Maya, when a sleek black sedan pulled up sharply to the curb beside him.
The rear door opened, and Beatrice Vance stepped out. She looked fragile, her face hidden behind oversized sunglasses, though she couldn't hide the tension in her jaw.
"Julian," she called out, her voice tight. "Please. Stop for a moment."
Julian paused, holding the shopping bag. He didn't approach the car, forcing his mother to step onto the sidewalk toward him. "Hello, Mother. If you're looking for Arthur, I assume he's at his club trying to figure out how to open an Excel spreadsheet."
"Julian, please don't be cruel," Beatrice said, her voice cracking. "Your father is under an immense amount of stress. His blood pressure is dangerously high. The banks are threatening to call in our personal loans if the company's valuation drops any further."
"And why are you telling me this?" Julian asked, his tone perfectly neutral.
"Because you can fix it!" Beatrice cried, reaching out to touch his arm, though Julian subtly stepped back, avoiding her hand. "Come back, Julian. We will make you the Senior Executive Vice President. We will double your salary. We'll even give Maya a trust fund—a large one! She can go to any university she wants when she grows up."
Julian let out a short, humorless laugh. "A trust fund now? How convenient. Where was this generosity on New Year's Day, Mother? When Father handed my eight-year-old daughter a piece of trash and called her worthless, you sat there and passed out designer bags. You didn't say a word. You didn't look at her. You just wanted to make sure your lifestyle wasn't disrupted."
"I was trying to keep the peace!" Beatrice protested, tears leaking from beneath her sunglasses. "You know how your father is. He's proud, he's stubborn—"
"No, he's a bully," Julian corrected her sharply. "And you are his enabler. You thought Maya didn't count because she's a quiet little girl who doesn't boast or demand attention. You thought I would stay silent because I always have. But you miscalculated. You didn't realize that while I would tolerate your abuse directed at me, the moment you targeted my daughter, you signed the death warrant for your company."
"Julian, we are your family!"
"Family protects each other, Mother. Family doesn't humiliate a child to feed an old man's ego. Tell Arthur that I am not interested in his promotions, his money, or his fake apologies. Apex Forwarding is currently finalizing the acquisition of the Target-Source contract. When that contract signs next week, Vance Logistics will lose sixty percent of its remaining valuation. I suggest you start looking into downsizing your house."
Beatrice gasped, staring at him in absolute horror. "You... you're trying to destroy us."
May you like
"No," Julian said quietly, turning to walk away. "I am just letting the gravity of your own choices do the work. Have a nice day, Mother."
He walked down the street without looking back, leaving his mother standing on the sidewalk, watching the final collapse of her comfortable world approach like a thundercloud.
