Chapter 2 - The Emergency Room and the Evidence

The sterile white lights of the emergency room felt blinding after the chaotic, tear-filled drive from our home. Emma was lying on a hospital bed, her face covered in soothing, medicated gauze pads. The doctor assured us that because we had washed her skin immediately, the chemical burns would likely heal without permanent scarring, though the pain and swelling would take days to subside.

While Daniel sat beside Emma, holding her small hand and whispering apologies he didn't need to make, I paced the corridor. My mind raced back to our living room, to the small plastic bottle of industrial drain cleaner left deliberately on the side table. It was a message. Richard wasn't just malicious; he was arrogant. He wanted us to know what he had done, and he wanted us to know he could walk away from it.

Officer Miller, a seasoned detective with tired eyes and a no-nonsense demeanor, approached me with a plastic evidence bag. Inside was the jar of "Snow Angel Glow Cream."

“Mrs. Pierce,” Officer Miller said softly, his voice cutting through my spiraling thoughts. “We’ve secured your house. Your father-in-law’s vehicle is gone, but we put out an all-points bulletin. We also took the drain cleaner and the cream jar for chemical analysis.”

“Is it what I think it is?” I asked, my voice trembling with a mix of fury and fear.

“Preliminary tests on the drain cleaner match the chemical traces found inside the cream jar,” Miller confirmed, his jaw tightening. “Someone intentionally mixed corrosive sodium hydroxide into a cosmetic container. This wasn't a random accident or a defective product. This was calculated poisoning.”

Daniel walked out of Emma’s room, closing the door quietly behind him. His face was ghostly pale, his eyes red-rimmed. He heard the last part of Miller’s sentence. He leaned against the hospital wall, sliding down until he hit the floor, burying his face in his hands.

“My own father,” Daniel choked out, his voice cracking. “He bought her that. He watched her open it. He wanted to hurt my little girl just to punish you, Clara. God help me, I didn't think he was capable of this.”

I knelt beside my husband, wrapping my arms around his shaking shoulders. For years, Daniel had tried to keep the peace between his domineering father and our young family, always making excuses for Richard's toxic behavior. Now, the blinders were off. The man he called dad had tried to maim his daughter.

“We’re going to find him, Daniel,” I whispered fiercely, my heart hardening into steel. “And this time, he won't be able to smile his way out of it.”
