Chapter 10 - The Warmth of Tomorrow

Winter returned a year after that fateful Christmas morning, but this time, it brought no fear or dread—only the quiet magic of the season.
Our new home was decorated from top to bottom. Warm golden fairy lights lined the porch railings, a giant pine wreath hung on our front door, and inside, a magnificent Christmas tree sparkled with ornaments we had collected together throughout our travels. There was no shadow in the corner, no toxic presence lurking behind a polite smile. There was only peace, laughter, and unconditional love.
On Christmas morning, the living room was filled with the joyful sound of wrapping paper ripping and Emma’s delighted giggles. She unwrapped books, art supplies, a new bicycle, and a cozy winter sweater knitted by a dear friend.
As I stood by the kitchen counter, brewing fresh coffee and watching Daniel help Emma assemble a new Lego set on the rug, the doorbell rang.
My heart skipped a beat for a fraction of a second—an instinctive echo of past trauma. But Daniel caught my eye, smiled reassuringly, and walked to the front door.
He pulled it open. There was no police officer, no hostile face, no threat.
Just our kind neighbor, Mrs. Gable, holding a warm plate of freshly baked cinnamon rolls wrapped in a festive red bow.
“Merry Christmas, Daniel! Just wanted to drop these off for you and the family,” Mrs. Gable beamed warmly.
“Thank you so much, Martha. Happy holidays to you too!” Daniel replied, accepting the plate with genuine gratitude.
He closed the door, walked back into the living room, and placed the plate on the coffee table. The sweet aroma of cinnamon filled the room, mingling with the scent of pine and hot cocoa.
Emma looked up from her Legos, her eyes sparkling with pure happiness. “Mom, can we eat one right now?”
I smiled, walking over and handing her a warm pastry. “Of course, sweetie. Merry Christmas.”
