Chapter 9 - The Safe Room and the Revelation

The emergency sirens echoed through the corridors as I scooped Zara up into my arms, her small body trembling violently against my chest. We bolted from her bedroom down the grand hallway, dodging rushing security guards who moved with grim, tactical precision toward the front entrance.

Outside the mansion, the muffled sound of gunfire cracked through the night air—short, sharp bursts that made the antique chandeliers overhead vibrate.

"Hold on to me tight, Zara," I whispered, kicking open the door to the master suite.

The master bedroom was vast, dominated by a king-sized bed and dark mahogany furnishings. Following Vince’s explicit instructions, I rushed toward the walk-in closet, shoving past rows of tailored suits and crisp white shirts. I pressed my hand against a disguised wood-grain panel at the back of the closet.

With a pneumatic hiss, the wall slid inward, revealing a flight of reinforced steel stairs leading down into the subterranean core of the estate.

"In, sweetie, go!" I urged, guiding Zara down the metal steps into a brightly lit, secure bunker equipped with emergency monitors, medical supplies, and food rations.

Once we were both inside, I hit the manual seal button on the inner wall. The heavy steel door locked into place with a resounding, metallic thud that instantly cut off the terrifying sound of gunfire from above.

Zara curled up on a leather cot in the corner of the safe room, clutching a small stuffed rabbit she had managed to grab from her bed. Her gray eyes were wide with terror as she looked up at the central monitor on the bunker wall, which displayed live feeds from the security cameras across the estate.

"Is daddy going to be okay?" she whispered, her voice cracking with grief.

I sat down beside her, wrapping my arm around her shoulders and staring up at the screen. On the monitor, we watched Vincent Kretti and his elite security detail holding the grand foyer against a wave of masked intruders who had breached the front doors. Vince moved with ruthless, calculating precision, neutralizing threats with cold efficiency, a man fighting not for power or territory, but for the only two things left in the world that mattered to him.

"Your dad is the strongest man I’ve ever met, Zara," I said softly, though my own heart was threatening to break from anxiety. "He’s not going to let anything happen to us."

As we watched the chaotic battle unfold on the screen, a secondary camera feed flickered to life in the corner of the monitor—showing the security control room on the ground floor.

A figure in a sharp black suit stood near the main console, typing furiously on a terminal.

I squinted at the monitor, my breath catching in my throat. Even through the grainy night-vision lens, the sharp posture, the pinned-back hair, and the unmistakable black wool gloves were blindingly clear.

It was Monique.

She wasn't hiding from the intruders. She was opening the inner courtyard gates for them.
