Chapter 8 - The Breach at the Eastern Gate

The red light pulsing on the security monitor flashed with blinding urgency.
Perimeter breach. Sector Four. Eastern Gate.
Vince Kretti moved with terrifying speed. In one fluid motion, he swept the leather journal off the desk and shoved it into my hands. "Take this. Keep it safe."
Before I could process the command, he pulled a sleek, encrypted satellite phone from his pocket and hit a single speed-dial button. His voice dropped into a register so cold and commanding it made the hair on my arms stand up.
"Marcus, report," Vince barked into the phone as he walked briskly toward a concealed biometric panel behind his mahogany bookshelf. "Status on Sector Four."
A raspy voice crackled through the speaker, punctuated by the faint, distinct sound of shouting and heavy footsteps. "Boss, we've got an unauthorized vehicle ramming the outer security gate! Three black SUVs, heavily armed. They bypassed the electronic jammers. It's the Morosco syndicate. They know you're in the main residence."
Vince’s jaw tightened into a lethal line. "Lock down the estate. Initiate Protocol Alpha. Do not let them breach the inner courtyard."
He pressed his thumb against the biometric scanner on the wall panel. With a heavy, pneumatic hiss, a section of the mahogany bookshelf swung outward, revealing a hidden armory lined with tactical gear, communication arrays, and high-grade firearms.
I stood frozen near the center of the room, clutching my father's old journal to my chest. The ghosts of the past hadn't just caught up with us—they had brought an army to the front door.
"Hazel," Vince’s voice snapped me out of my daze. He turned around, sliding a tactical vest over his shoulders and checking the magazine of a heavy automatic rifle with practiced ease. "Listen to me very carefully. The safe room is located behind the master bedroom closet. Take Zara down there immediately."
"What about you?" I asked, my heart hammering against my ribs.
"I have a war to finish," Vince said coldly, his slate-gray eyes locking onto mine with fierce intensity. "Twenty years ago, I failed to protect your family from the fire. I will not let these animals lay a hand on my daughter—or on you. Now go!"
Without another word, I turned and bolted out of the private study, sprinting down the long hallway toward Zara’s bedroom.
The mansion around us was no longer a silent museum. Heavy emergency sirens began to wail through the corridors, bathing the white Carrara marble in a pulsing red glow. Armed security guards in tactical gear rushed past me toward the grand staircase, their heavy combat boots thundering against the floor.
I reached Zara’s door, twisted the handle, and threw it open.
The little girl was cowering in the corner of her bed, her hands clamped tightly over her ears, tears streaming down her pale face as the sirens wailed outside.
"Hazel!" Zara sobbed, scrambling off the bed and running straight into my arms—breaking her own rules, breaking the sanctuary walls, because she knew the danger outside was real.

I dropped to my knees, wrapping my arms tightly around her small frame, and pressed a kiss to the top of her dark hair.
"I've got you, Zara," I whispered fiercely, pulling her toward the master suite. "We're getting out of here. Together."
