Chapter 7 - The Midnight Intrusion

The clock on the mantelpiece struck midnight.

The storm that had threatened the Rinaldi estate for days finally broke, unleashing sheets of heavy rain against the tall French windows of the mansion. Inside, the house was dark, save for the soft amber glow of the hallway sconces.

Serena was wide awake.

Sitting at the small mahogany desk in her guest suite, she was reviewing bank statements, utility bills, and copies of her rental agreement, organizing every scrap of paper into a neat folder for her lawyer. The custody hearing was looming closer, and the weight of it pressed heavily against her chest.

Suddenly, a low, rhythmic hum vibrated through the floorboards.

It wasn't thunder. It was the estate’s secondary security alarm—a silent, encrypted pulse meant only for Victor and his inner circle.

Serena froze. She listened carefully.

From down the hall came the faint, muffled sound of footsteps—heavy, calculated, and definitely not belonging to the housekeepers or the children.

She didn't hesitate.

She stood up instantly, slipping out into the dimly lit hallway. The security protocols Victor had mentioned earlier echoed in her mind: If things get dangerous, you lock the boys in the panic room.

Serena sprinted down the corridor toward the quadruplets' adjoining bedroom suite. She pushed the door open silently. All four boys were fast asleep in their beds, tangled in blankets.

“Marco,” Serena whispered urgently, shaking the oldest boy by the shoulder. “Marco, wake up. Quietly.”

Marco’s eyes snapped open. He opened his mouth to complain, but one look at Serena’s face—pale, focused, and entirely devoid of fear—silenced him instantly.

“What’s happening?” Marco whispered, sitting up.

“We’re going on a midnight adventure,” Serena said, keeping her voice calm and steady as she ushered Nico, Alessandro, and Tommy out of their beds. “I need you four to follow me into the library right now, no talking, no questions.”

Training from countless games of hide-and-seek and mock drills made the boys move quickly. They didn't cry; they sensed the gravity in Serena’s posture.

As she hurried them toward the hidden corridor behind the massive mahogany bookshelf in the study, the sound of splintering wood echoed from the grand staircase downstairs.

Intruders.

Serena pushed the secret panel open, nudging the boys inside the reinforced panic room, which was stocked with emergency supplies, warm blankets, and a secure monitor screen.

“Stay inside,” Serena instructed firmly, gripping Marco’s shoulders. “If anyone opens this door who isn't me or your father, you press this red button on the wall. Do you understand?”

“Where are you going?” Tommy asked, his lip trembling slightly in the dark.

“I’m going to make sure your father knows you’re safe,” Serena said softly, giving him a reassuring smile before pulling the heavy steel door closed until it locked with a heavy, satisfying click.
