Chapter 7 - DISMANTLING THE EMPIRE

Over the next six months, the city of Chicago witnessed a transformation that no political analyst or mafia historian could have ever predicted.

Using the secondary evidence and financial records Marcus recovered from Dante Salvatore’s secondary safes, Nathaniel didn't use the power to become a kingpin of crime. Instead, he systematically dismantled the Cross crime syndicate.

He handed over key evidence to uncorrupted federal prosecutors, leading to the arrest of over forty high-ranking mobsters and corrupt officials across three states. He liquidated the syndicate’s illegal assets — worth hundreds of millions of dollars — and converted them into the Eleanor Cross Foundation, a massive charitable organization dedicated to building shelters for domestic violence victims, funding pediatric hospitals, and creating safe havens for abandoned animals.

The news outlets called it "The Miracle of Chicago." The terrifying underworld boss Nathaniel Cross had dissolved his empire overnight, turning his vast resources toward healing the city he had once helped control.

The grand Cross manor, once a cold, silent fortress surrounded by armed guards and razor wire, underwent its own dramatic evolution. The heavy security walls were lowered, replaced by wrought-iron fences covered in blooming white roses. The dark, ominous court yards were filled with laughter, flower beds, and playground equipment.

Clara was no longer a housekeeper. Nathaniel had appointed her as the Director of Operations for the Eleanor Cross Foundation, recognizing her fierce intelligence, organizational talent, and unwavering integrity. She had moved into a beautiful, sunlit suite in the west wing of the manor, equipped with a private garden where she could watch Lily play.

One sunny afternoon in late spring, Nathaniel sat on the veranda, sipping a cup of fresh coffee. He was dressed not in his old black suits, but in a simple linen shirt and trousers. He looked younger, the harsh lines on his face smoothed away by peace.

Beside him, sleeping peacefully in a warm patch of sunlight, was Titan. The dog had aged gracefully; his coat was shiny, his wounds fully healed, and his temperament transformed into that of a devoted, gentle protector.

Lily, now four years old, came running across the lawn holding a plastic watering can, wearing a bright yellow sundress.

"Mr. Nathaniel! Look!" she called out, pointing to a small garden bed near the fountain. "The sunflowers we planted are growing!"

Nathaniel stood up, setting his coffee down, and walked down the veranda steps to join her. He knelt in the rich soil beside her, helping her pour water over the green sprouts pushing through the earth.

"They're growing fast, Lily," Nathaniel said with a gentle smile. "Just like you."

Clara walked out onto the veranda, holding a folder of foundation documents, stopping to watch the two of them. She smiled, a deep feeling of contentment settling in her heart. A year ago, she was starving, terrified, and hunted by poverty. Today, she was helping thousands of women and children rebuild their lives, and her daughter was safe, loved, and happy.
