Chapter 9 - Awakening

Two days later, the sun was shining brightly through the window of Room 412 at St. Jude Memorial Hospital. The heavy security guards were gone, replaced by a bouquet of fresh yellow lilies sitting on the windowsill.

Sarah’s eyes slowly fluttered open. The pale, ghost-like complexion that had worried me for months was beginning to fade, replaced by a warm, natural color.

"Ethan...?" her voice was raspy, barely a whisper.

I immediately stood up from the armchair beside her bed and took her soft hand in mine. "I'm right here, Sarah. I'm right here."

She blinked against the sunlight, looking around the room in confusion. "What... what happened? Where is my mother?"

I squeezed her hand gently, sitting on the edge of the bed. Dr. Reed had already detoxified Sarah's system, neutralizing the Digoxin. Her heart rhythm was back to normal, and for the first time in six months, her mind was clear.

Gently, tenderly, I told her everything. I told her about the trust fund clause, the hidden vials in her nightstand, Marlene’s manipulation of Dr. Vance, and the brave stand our daughter had taken.

As I spoke, tears filled Sarah’s eyes—not tears of physical pain, but of profound grief and shock. To learn that the mother who raised you had been systematically poisoning you for financial gain was a wound no medicine could heal easily.

"She... she did that to Lily?" Sarah sobbed, her chest heaving. "She put her hands on our baby?"

"Lily is safe now, Sarah," I assured her, stroking her hair. "She’s downstairs in the cafeteria with Clara right now, getting ice cream. Marlene is in a high-security holding facility, denied bail. The police found all the evidence they needed from her house and the footage from my jacket camera. She will never, ever come near our family again."

Sarah pulled my hand to her face, pressing a long, tearful kiss to my knuckles. "You saved me, Ethan. You and Lily saved my life."

"We're a team," I whispered, kissing her forehead. "Always."

The door pushed open softly, and Lily walked in holding two strawberry ice cream cones, Clara following closely behind with a warm smile.

When Lily saw her mother awake and sitting up, her eyes lit up. "Mommy!"

"Oh, my sweet girl!" Sarah cried out, reaching her arms open.

Lily ran to the bed, carefully setting the ice cream down before burying her face into her mother's chest. For the first time in what felt like an eternity, the room was filled with tears of joy instead of fear.
