Chapter 7 - Confrontation in the Dark

The terrifying reality hit me—Marlene had sedated Lily. The fury inside me threatened to boil over, but I forced myself to remain stone-faced. The micro-camera in my jacket was capturing every word, every twitch of her twisted expression.

"I have the notebook," I said, reaching into my pocket and pulling out the leather-bound book, but keeping the vials hidden. "And I know everything, Marlene. I know about the 35th birthday deadline. I know you’ve been poisoning Sarah with Digoxin to keep control of the Whitaker estate."

Marlene scoffed, taking a step away from Clara, who slumped back against the sofa cushions, groggy from whatever mild sedative Marlene had slipped into her tea.

"Control?" Marlene sneered, her mask finally slipping completely. "I built that estate! My husband was a visionary, but I was the brain behind the corporate board! Sarah is weak, Ethan. Just like her father was in his final years. She wanted to donate half the shares to charity! She wanted to live in this pathetic suburban box with a high school teacher!"

"She wanted a life free of your toxic madness!" I shouted. "You were killing your own daughter!"

"I was saving the legacy!" Marlene shouted back, her voice echoing off the walls. "She was never meant to have that money! I offered her everything—distinction, power, respect—and she chose you. If she dies, the trust stays with me. If she lives as an invalid under my care, the trust stays with me. It was her choice!"

"You're sick," I whispered, stepping closer to draw her focus away from the stairs. "You put your hands on my nine-year-old child today. You threatened her life."

"She was in the way!" Marlene hissed, stepping into the light of the chandelier. "Just like you are. Give me the book, Ethan. Give it to me, or I will inject this old woman with enough concentrated potassium to stop her heart right here, and I'll tell the police you lost your mind after Sarah's collapse."

She was completely unhinged. She raised the injector toward Clara's neck.

At that exact moment, headlights flashed through the front window. Sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder rapidly.

Marlene froze, her eyes darting toward the window. "What did you do?"

"I didn't call them," I said quietly, a cold smile touching my lips. "The hospital did. The toxicology screen on Sarah's blood just finished, Marlene. It’s over."
