Chapter 2 - The Call That Changed Everything

The storm broke over the city around midnight, washing the high-rise windows of Dante Moretti’s penthouse in cold sheets of rain. Dante sat at his wide mahogany desk, a glass of unopened amber whiskey resting beside a stack of red-flagged security reports. His mind was not on the syndicate's shipping routes or the incoming Italian cartel delegates. His mind was locked on the silent, hollow ache that always returned around this time of year.

The tenth anniversary of his mother Isabella’s passing was three days away.

On his desk sat the silver-framed photograph of Isabella Moretti—a woman whose smile had once been the only light in the violent, shadow-drenched world his father had built. She had died of a sudden, cruel heart failure, or so the official medical reports had claimed decade ago. Yet, every year, the silence around her death felt less like peace and more like a carefully constructed wall.

Dante reached for the phone. It was past nine in the morning now; his internal clock was shattered by sleeplessness. At the office, Clara Hayes was missing.

It was utterly unlike her. In three years, Clara had been the single constant anchor in his chaotic life. She was quiet, meticulous, and unfazed by the dangerous men who passed through his doors. More importantly, she never pried. She respected the lines.

Except today, she was absent without notice.

A dark irritation flashed through Dante. He was a man accustomed to absolute control. In his world, a lapse in discipline was a vulnerability. He picked up his encrypted cell phone and dialed Clara’s personal number, intending to fire her on the spot. He could not afford a secretary whose personal life compromised her reliability, not with the cartel meeting approaching and his upcoming high-profile wedding to Valeria St. Clair.

The phone rang four times. He was about to disconnect and instruct Marcus to handle her termination when the call picked up.

There was no professional greeting. No polite, breathless apology from Clara.

Instead, a tiny, trembling voice came through the speaker, accompanied by the quiet, ragged sound of shallow breathing.

“H-hello?”

Dante froze. His thumb hovered over the end button. “Who is this? Give the phone to Clara.”

A soft sob escaped the other end, followed by the rustle of a heavy blanket.

“Mommy can’t get up,” the little girl whispered, her voice tight with panic and hot tears. “I tried to wake her... I pulled her hand, but she’s real cold. Mommy... Mommy won’t open her eyes.”

Dante stood up so fast his heavy leather chair skidded back against the hardwood floor. The cold authority in his chest evaporated, replaced by an instinct he hadn’t felt in years.

“Little one,” Dante said, his voice dropping into a low, steady pitch, stripping away the harshness of the mob boss and replacing it with the calm control of a commander. “Listen to me carefully. What is your name?”

“L-Lily...”

“Lily. I am your mother’s boss, Mr. Moretti. I need you to tell me where you are. Is Mommy breathing?”

“She’s making a funny noise... like a blowy wind,” Lily sniffled. “She fell down by the kitchen table. There’s paper on the floor. She told me last night her chest hurt, but she didn’t take the medicine because she said we needed the money for my doctor...”

Dante felt a sudden, brutal punch in his gut. Her chest hurt.

“Lily, listen to me. Don't touch anything. I am coming right now. Do you hear me? I am coming to your house.”

“Will you make Mommy wake up?”

“Yes,” Dante promised, his voice hard as steel. “I will.”

He snapped the line shut and stormed out of his private office. Marcus, standing guard in the corridor, straightened immediately.

“Boss? The meeting with the St. Clair foundation is in twenty minutes—”

“Cancel it,” Dante growled, striding toward the private elevator. “Get the car. We’re going to Clara’s apartment. Get Dr. Lucian on the line and tell him to drive a mobile trauma unit to her address now.”

Marcus blinked in rare surprise. “Miss Hayes? Boss, Valeria is waiting downstairs with the pre-nuptial arrangements—”

“I don’t give a damn who is waiting!” Dante roared, his eyes flashing with a terrifying fire. “If Clara dies, someone answers to me. Move!”
