Chapter 4 - A Conspiracy of Flesh and Code

I sat there, staring at the blank screen of my phone, paralyzed by a primal, suffocating terror. He was coming.

Just then, the doors to the operating wing pushed open, and Dr. Evans walked out, still wearing his blue scrubs. His face was etched with exhaustion, but there was a flicker of relief in his eyes.

"We got it out," he said quickly, guiding me into a private consultation room. He shut the door and placed a sterile glass jar on the table.

Inside the jar, covered in a thin film of biological residue and dark, corroding acid, was a sleek, black metallic cylinder. It looked like an oversized capsule, but on its side was a tiny, blinking red LED light. It was pulsing rhythmically, like a mechanical heartbeat.

"It was lodged in the duodenum," Dr. Evans said. "It had already caused a minor ulceration, which is why he was in so much pain. We flushed his system and closed him up. He's in recovery, stable, but heavily sedated. He’ll survive, Elena. He’s a strong boy."

"He knows," I gasped out, the tears finally spilling over. "Dr. Evans, Carlos knows. He tracked the device. He knows we are here, and he’s on his way. He said... he said if we open Daniel up, we destroy everything."

Dr. Evans looked at the blinking device in the jar. "He’s tracking this? Then we don't have much time. I’ve already contacted a friend of mine—Detective Marcus Vance. He works with the federal task force on domestic abuse and child exploitation. He’s on his way, but your husband might get here first."

"What is that thing?" I demanded, pointing a shaking finger at the jar. "Why would a father put that inside his son?"

Before Dr. Evans could answer, the door to the room opened, and a tall, sharp-eyed man in a dark trench coat walked in. He showed a gold shield. Detective Vance.

"I can answer that, Mrs. Ramírez," Vance said, his voice deep and reassuring. He locked the door behind him. "Your husband isn't just a software engineer. For the past eighteen months, federal agencies have been investigating his employer, 'Aegis Sentinel'. They design military-grade encryption keys and hardware-based data vaults. Carlos was suspected of stealing a highly classified prototype—a quantum-encrypted cold storage drive containing the identities and locations of deep-cover federal operatives."

I stared at the detective, my mind refusing to process the words. "A data drive? Inside Daniel?"

"It’s the ultimate dead-drop," Vance said grimly. "Biologically shielded, impossible to scan at airport security without medical-grade X-rays, and constantly monitored by a localized biometric ping. Carlos didn't just want to track his son; he used his son’s body as a safe-deposit box to smuggle stolen state secrets out of the country. He planned to flee to a non-extradition territory next week. He was going to extract it himself once they landed."

"Extract it?" I whispered, horror washing over me in a freezing wave. "How?"

Vance’s silence was more terrifying than any verbal answer. Carlos was a monster. He had never loved Daniel. To him, our beautiful, vibrant boy was nothing more than a piece of biological luggage.
