Chapter 3 - The Surgeon’s Scalpel and the Predator’s Call

The next three hours were a blur of sterile corridors, the harsh squeak of rubber soles on linoleum, and the agonizing scent of antiseptic. They wheeled Daniel away. Before they did, he looked up at me with half-lidded, terrified eyes.
"Mommy... am I going to be okay?" he whispered, a single tear cutting a clean path through the grime on his pale cheek.
"You're going to be perfect, my love," I lied, my voice shaking as I kissed his forehead. "The doctors are going to take the pain away. I'll be right here when you wake up. I promise."
Once the double doors of the operating room swung shut, I collapsed into a plastic chair in the private waiting nook Dr. Evans had secured for me. I was alone with my thoughts, and they were terrifying.
Why would Carlos do this? Carlos was a high-level software engineer for a private defense contractor. He was always secretive, always talking about security, encryption, and "assets." But to treat his own son as a vessel? As a hiding place? Or was it something worse? Was it a way to track us? To ensure I could never run away with our son?
Bzzzt. Bzzzt.
The vibration of my phone in my purse felt like an electric shock. I pulled it out. The caller ID read: Carlos.
My heart hammered against my ribs. I looked around the empty hallway. My finger hovered over the red button, but I knew that if I didn't answer, he would suspect something. I forced my breathing to slow down, trying to channel the submissive, quiet wife he had spent a decade molding.
"Hello, Carlos?" I said, keeping my voice level.
"Where are you, Elena?" His voice was cold, devoid of any warmth, carrying that familiar, underlying current of threat. "I came home for lunch. The car is gone. Daniel’s bed is empty."
"I... I took Daniel out," I said, my mind racing. "He was feeling a bit better. We went to the park to get some fresh air. Just like you suggested... to get him out of the house."
There was a long, suffocating silence on the other end. I could hear the faint sound of typing.
"You're lying," Carlos said flatly. "I’m looking at the home security logs. You left at 8:15 AM. You didn't take the stroller or his jacket. And my remote diagnostic tool shows a massive signal drop-off near the county line. Where are you, Elena?"
"I'm just at the local mall, Carlos! We're in the play area—"
"Stop," he hissed. The venom in his voice made me shudder. "I know you took him to a clinic. I tracked your phone's GPS before you turned off the location services. But you forgot one thing, didn't you? Daniel’s signal is still active. It's weak, shielded by medical equipment, but it's there. You brought him to St. Jude’s Community Clinic."
My breath hitched. He knew.

"Listen to me very carefully, Elena," Carlos whispered, his voice dropping to a terrifyingly calm register. "Do not let any doctor touch him. Do not let them perform any scans. If they open him up, you will destroy everything I have worked for. I am coming there now. If you are not in the lobby with Daniel when I arrive... you will find out exactly what happens to people who betray me."
The line went dead.
