Chapter 8 - The Price of Control

The moment the door closed behind Emily, Michael opened the document folder Eleanor had given him. He cross-referenced the dates.
The investigator's report was dated three weeks after Emily was hired. The search history Eleanor pointed to wasn't a calculated scheme to infiltrate his life—it was a grieving sister trying to save her brother months before she ever set foot in the Carter estate.
Eleanor hadn't just protected him; she had manipulated the truth to maintain her grip on his life, using his trauma as a leash.
Michael stood up so fast his chair crashed into the bookshelf behind him. He marched straight down the hall to his mother’s quarters and threw the door open.
Eleanor was sitting at her vanity, applying face cream. "Michael? What is the meaning of—"
"You lied to me," Michael said, his voice trembling with a terrifying rage.
"I did no such thing! I presented facts—"
"You twisted the timing of her brother's medical appeals to make her look like a gold-digger!" Michael shouted, slamming his hand against the doorframe. "She came here as a heartbroken girl trying to pay off the medical debts of a dead child! And she saved my son when your pride almost let him choke!"
Eleanor stood up, her composure cracking. "I did it for you! Look at you! You were falling in love with a servant! What would our family say? What would Sarah think?"
"Don't you dare bring Sarah into this!" Michael yelled, tears spilling from his eyes. "Sarah loved people for their hearts, not their bank accounts! Sarah would have hated what this house became! You didn't build a safe home for Noah, Mother. You built a prison, and you forced me to be the warden!"

Eleanor gasped, taking a step back. "Michael..."
"I want you to move out," Michael said quietly, the anger draining away, leaving only absolute, unbreakable resolution. "You have your own penthouse in the city. Pack your things tomorrow. You can visit Noah on weekends, but you will no longer run this house. And you will never interfere in my life again."
