Chapter 2 - The Breath Between Shadows

Emily did not waste a second asking for permission. Whatever professional boundaries Michael had enforced, whatever authority he believed he possessed inside the high walls of his estate, dissolved the moment Noah’s chest hitched into a strained, shallow quiver.

"He’s choking on thick mucus from a febrile seizure spike," Emily said, her voice dropping into a low, terrifyingly calm register. She didn’t wait for Michael’s response. Moving past him with smooth precision, she picked Noah up from the crib, tilting his tiny body forward across her forearm, supporting his chin while keeping his head lower than his chest.

Michael stood paralyzed, his thumb frozen over the screen of his phone where the emergency operator was asking for his address. "I... I gave the location," Michael stammered, the cold, ruthless billionaire vanishing into a helpless father facing his worst nightmare. "They said six minutes."

"Six minutes is too long," Emily said firmly. She placed two fingers gently between Noah’s shoulder blades and applied rhythmic, measured firm pats, clearing his airway just enough for a faint, desperate gasp to break through.

Noah’s face shifted from a terrifying dusky violet back to a flushed, feverish pink. He let out a weak, raspy wail—a sound that, to Michael’s ears, was the sweetest music in the world.

Michael dropped to his knees beside them, his hand shaking uncontrollably as he touched Noah’s foot. "He's breathing... oh God, he's breathing."

"His fever is over 103," Emily whispered, holding the baby snug against her shoulder while checking the back of his neck. "The sink wasn't a mistake, Mr. Carter. A lukewarm soak is the fastest way to bring down a rapid spike when medication hasn't kicked in yet. I watched my younger brother go into febrile convulsions when he was little. If you panic, they starve of oxygen."

Michael looked up at Emily. Her face was pale, sweat bead on her temple, but her eyes held an unyielding strength. In that fleeting second, he didn't see an replaceable employee or a girl with an incomplete résumé. He saw the barrier standing between his son and the grave.

The sharp siren of the paramedic unit echoed down the long private driveway. Outside the door, Michael’s mother, Eleanor Carter, hurried into the nursery, her voice shrill. "Michael! The ambulance is here! What did that girl do to him?"

Michael slowly rose to his feet. His mother reached out to grab Noah from Emily, but Michael stepped between them, his gaze cold and unwavering.

"She saved his life, Mother," Michael said, his voice quiet, heavy, and raw. "She saved him while we were busy looking at protocols."
