Chapter 9 - Finding Purpose

The next four years were a time of tremendous growth and healing.
Ethan thrived at university. No longer burdened by anxiety, abuse, or financial dread, his natural brilliance shone through. He joined the university’s robotics team, maintained a 3.9 GPA, and secured a summer internship with a top aerospace engineering firm in the state.
He didn't just rebuild his own life; he used his experience to help others.
During his sophomore year, Ethan co-founded a student organization on campus called First Step Foundation, which provides financial literacy coaching, legal assistance referrals, and emergency housing support for young adults escaping abusive home environments or aging out of foster care.
"Grandpa," he told me one evening as we worked together in our backyard workshop, sanding down a piece of oak for a new dining table. "When I was standing out in the snow that night, I thought I was completely alone in the world. I thought nobody was coming to help me. I want to make sure no other kid ever feels that way."
I looked at my grandson—now a confident, strong, and deeply empathetic young man—and felt a pride so profound it brought warmth to my chest.

Claudia’s appeals were repeatedly denied, and she served her full term without early parole.
The suburban illusion they had sacrificed their morality to build had crumbled completely into dust, leaving them with nothing but the consequences of their actions.
