Chapter 4 - The Confrontation

Claudia shrieked, dropping her coffee mug onto the rug as I walked into the entryway, followed closely by the process server and Frank’s crew carrying heavy toolbags.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Claudia screamed, pulling her robe tight around herself. "Mark! Get down here! Your father has lost his mind!"
Mark came tumbling down the stairs, wearing sweatpants, his hair disheveled. "Dad? What are you doing? You can't just barge in here with strangers!"
"I don't need permission to enter a property I legally own," I said calmly, stepping aside as the process server stepped forward.
"Mark Vance? Claudia Vance?" the server asked in a neutral, professional tone.
"Yes," Mark stammered.
"You are formally served with an Emergency Injunction, an order to freeze financial accounts, and an immediate Notice to Vacate premises issued by the County Superior Court." He handed two thick manila envelopes to Mark, who took them automatically, his face turning ghostly white.
"Notice to vacate?" Claudia sneered, snatching the papers from Mark's hand and ripping them open. "Is this a joke? We live here! We’ve lived here for seven years! You can't throw us out!"
"Read the deed, Claudia," I said, my voice ice cold. "You are unauthorized occupants on property owned by the Vance Family Trust. As sole trustee, I am terminating your occupancy effective immediately due to unlawful activity conducted on the premises."
"What unlawful activity?!" she shrieked.
I pulled out a printed copy of the bank statements from Emily’s trust fund and threw them onto the glass coffee table. The papers fanned out, showing the highlighted red lines of every illegal transaction she had authorized over the last eighteen months.
Mark looked at the papers, then looked at me, his lip trembling. "Dad... please... let me explain..."
"Explain what, Mark?" I stepped closer to him, looking my son straight in the eyes. "Explain how you let this woman strip your dead wife's legacy away from your son? Explain how you sat at the dinner table eating turkey while your eighteen-year-old child was freezing outside in his shorts because he dropped a plate of potatoes? Explain how you used your son’s college money to buy a luxury car?"
Claudia stepped between us, her eyes wide with fury. "That money was used for household expenses! We fed him! We clothed him! He owed us!"
"The law disagrees," I replied. "Emily’s trust fund was legally protected. Every single dollar you took is considered felony embezzlement and grand larceny. Arthur Pendelton has already filed a formal complaint with the District Attorney's office. A detective will be reaching out to you shortly."
Claudia’s confident facade began to crumble for the first time. She looked at Mark, expecting him to defend her, but Mark was staring at the floor, totally defeated.
"Frank," I called out to the locksmith standing by the door. "Change every lock on the exterior doors. Front, back, garage, and side. Give two sets of keys directly to me."

"You can't do this!" Claudia screamed, stepping toward Frank. "Get out of my house!"
"It’s not your house," Frank said quietly, pulling his drill from his toolbag. "Never was."
