Chapter 5 - The Unraveling

Brandon looked down at the scattered papers on the floor. For a brief second, a flicker of unease crossed his face, quickly masked by his usual arrogant smirk.

"What is this nonsense? More of your mother's dramatic paperwork?" He bent down, scooped up a few pages, and skimmed the top document—the commercial lease agreement for his downtown office.

His eyes scanned the lines. The smirk slowly vanished. His color faded, turning an ashen gray.

"This... this is a mistake," he stammered, flipping to the next page—the property deed for the suburban house he and Claire lived in. "The bank... the landlord... this says..."

"It says that the landlord you’ve been boasting to your golf buddies about for three years is me," I said, stepping closer to him. "It says the commercial space downtown is subsidized entirely by my holding company. And it says that the luxury SUV parked in my driveway is currently financed under my corporate credit line."

Brandon looked up, his jaw slack. He looked from me to Claire, desperation creeping into his voice.

"Claire... is this... is this true? Your mother bought the office?"

Claire looked down at him, her spine stiffening in a way I hadn't seen in years. "I didn't know about the office details until today, Brandon. But I knew the house was hers. I knew we hadn't paid rent in over a year. I knew every time you bought a new watch or a new gadget, it was because Mom quietly absorbed your financial failures behind the scenes."

Brandon’s face contorted with embarrassment, quickly turning into defensive rage.

"You lied to me!" he shouted, pointing an accusing finger at me. "You set me up! You made me look like a fool!"

"No, Brandon," I replied, my voice slicing through his anger like a scalpel. "You made yourself look like a fool when you decided that arrogance and cruelty were acceptable substitutes for character. You walked into my home, demanded my seat, insulted my hospitality, and treated my daughter like a servant. And you did it all while standing on a pedestal that I built with my own hands."

"You can't do this!" Brandon panicked, his voice pitching higher. "If you pull the lease, my business goes under! If you evict us, where are we going to live? You can't throw your own grandchildren out on the street!"

"I am not throwing my grandchildren out," I said calmly. "Lily and Owen are always welcome under my roof. But you, Brandon? You are no longer welcome. And your financial crutch has officially snapped."

Brandon turned frantically to Claire, grabbing her by the shoulders. "Claire, tell her! Tell her she’s insane! We’re a family! We’re married!"

Claire looked down at his hands gripping her shoulders, then slowly reached up and peeled his fingers away one by one.

"Take your hands off me, Brandon," she said, her voice terrifyingly steady. "And pack your things."
