Chapter 4 - The Ultimatum

Claire stared at the documents in her hands, the color completely draining from her face. She looked up at me, her eyes wide with a mixture of disbelief and growing dread.

"Mom... what are you doing? If you pull the leases, if you evict him from his office... Brandon will lose everything. He’ll be ruined. He’ll blame me!"

"Let him blame you," I said firmly, pulling up a chair and sitting directly across from her. "Or better yet, let him face the truth for the first time in his adult life. For five years, Claire, I have watched you shrink yourself to fit inside his ego. I have watched him belittle your opinions, spend my money like water, and treat you like an accessory to his success rather than a partner. And last night, he made it clear that in his eyes, I am nothing more than an unwelcome guest in the home I built."

"He was just trying to impress his mother," Claire sobbed, burying her face in her hands. "Donna is so critical of him, and he tries so hard to prove he’s a big shot—"

"Stop making excuses for him, Claire," I interrupted, my voice sharp enough to cut through her tears. "An explanation is not an excuse. You are my daughter, brilliant, kind, and capable of so much more than walking on eggshells in your own life. But you chose to marry a man who values domination over partnership. Now, you have a choice to make."

She slowly dropped her hands, her eyes red and swollen. "What choice?"

"You can stay with him, pack your bags, and live out the rest of your life tip-toeing around a man who respects no one—in which case, you and Brandon can start paying market-rate rent on your house starting January first, and Brandon can take over his own commercial lease without my backing."

Claire gasped. "We couldn't possibly afford market rent! And his office lease is five times what he pays now!"

"Exactly," I said. "Or, option two: you pack your bags, bring Lily and Owen over here, and file for a legal separation. Give yourself breathing room. Let Brandon figure out how to be a man without a safety net."

Before Claire could answer, the heavy oak door of the studio flew open.

There stood Brandon, his face flushed red with fury, his designer coat unzipped. He looked past Claire, fixing his furious glare directly on me.

"What the hell is going on here?" Brandon shouted, stepping into the studio without an invitation. "Claire, your mother has been ignoring my calls all morning, and you’ve been gone for an hour! Do you have any idea how embarrassing this is? My mother is still at the house, demanding to know why the matriarch of the family threw a fit and fled like a child!"

I didn't flinch. I slowly stood up from my chair, towering over him despite the height difference.

"Lower your voice in my studio, Brandon," I said coldly.

"Your studio?" He let out a harsh, mocking laugh. "This is our family property! Well, technically Claire's inheritance eventually, which means it's half mine! You think you can just walk out of Christmas dinner and throw a tantrum because my mother took the head seat? Get over yourself! You’re an aging widow who doesn't know how to handle not being the center of attention!"

Claire stood up quickly, her voice shaking. "Brandon, stop it! Just shut up!"

"Don't you tell me to shut up, Claire!" Brandon snapped, turning his wrath onto his wife. "This is your fault! You coddle her! You let her walk all over us—"

"She didn't walk over us, Brandon," Claire said, her voice suddenly dropping into a chilling, unfamiliar calm. She looked at her husband—truly looked at him—for the first time in years. "She built us. Every single thing you're bragging about... you didn't earn any of it."

Brandon sneered. "What are you talking about?"

I walked over to the desk, picked up the manila folder, and tossed it onto the floor right at his feet. Papers fluttered out across the hardwood.

"Pick them up, Brandon," I whispered. "And read every single word."
