Chapter 9 - Whispers of the Past

That evening, after Sarah had gone home and Lily had drifted off to sleep upstairs, I sat on the porch swing with a woolen blanket draped over my shoulders.
The stars overhead were bright and piercing, glittering against the vast expanse of the night sky like diamond dust. The gentle lapping of the lake against the shoreline provided a soothing, rhythmic soundtrack to the quiet night.
A soft click of the screen door signaled Lily padding out onto the porch in her fluffy pajamas, clutching her favorite stuffed rabbit.
"Can't sleep, bug?" I asked softly, patting the empty space on the swing next to me.
Lily crawled up beside me, pulling the blanket over her legs and resting her head against my shoulder. "Just thinking."
"About what?"
"About the cabin," she murmured, her voice barely louder than the wind. "Sometimes... sometimes I still hear the door locking."
I wrapped my arms tighter around her, kissing the crown of her head. "It's okay to remember, Lily. But remember this: the door is unlocked now. And nobody is ever going to lock it again. I am right here, and I will always, always protect you."
Lily looked up at me, a sleepy, peaceful smile gracing her lips. "I know, Mom. Because you're the best mom in the whole wide world."

"And you're my whole world," I whispered back.
We sat there together in the quiet sanctuary of our home, watching the moonlight dance across the water, knowing that no matter what storms had tried to tear us apart, we had finally found our way back to safe harbor.
