Chapter 5 - The Trap Springs Shut

"Open up! Chicago Police Department!"

The booming voice reverberated through the quiet suburban house. Mark spun around to face me, his eyes wide with absolute, unadulterated panic. He didn't look like a grieving husband anymore; he looked like a cornered animal realizing the cage door had slammed shut.

"What did you do?" Mark hissed, grabbing my wrist with a bruising grip. "What did you do, Elena?!"

"Let go of me, Mark," I whispered coldly, driving my heel down onto his foot with all the force I could muster.

He yelped, releasing my wrist just as the front door splintered inward with a deafening crash. Three armed officers in tactical gear flooded into the hallway, followed closely by Detective Miller of the Chicago PD and my sister Sarah, who looked triumphant.

"Mark Reynolds! Put your hands behind your back! You are under arrest for kidnapping, fraud, and conspiracy!" Detective Miller's voice echoed through the house as he drew his service weapon.

Mark stumbled backward, his hands flying up defensively. "This is a mistake! My wife is unstable! She's hallucinating—"

"The only hallucination here is the fake death certificate you filed two years ago, Reynolds," Detective Miller interrupted, snapping steel handcuffs onto Mark's wrists with practiced efficiency. "We traced the private medical facility in Wisconsin. We traced the payments you made to your cousin to act as the warden. And most importantly... we have the victim herself, safe and sound, currently giving a statement downtown with child advocates."

Hearing those words—the victim herself, safe and sound—sent a wave of pure, unadulterated ecstasy through my veins. The nightmare was over. The monster was caught.

As the officers marched Mark toward the front door, he craned his neck back, his eyes locking onto mine with a venomous glare.

"You're ruining everything, Elena!" he screamed over the commotion. "We could have had it all! The money, the freedom! You chose a brat over your own husband!"

"I chose my daughter," I replied steadily, watching as they shoved him into the back of a waiting squad car.

Sarah walked over and wrapped her arms around me, burying her face in my shoulder as we watched the cruiser drive away down the street.

"It's over, sis," Sarah whispered. "You won."

"Not yet," I replied, pulling away gently. "My daughter is still waiting for me."
