Chapter 6 - The Long Road Back to Consciousness

The emergency medical helicopter touched down on the tarmac behind St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital with a deafening roar of rotors, kicking up a whirlwind of autumn leaves. Paramedics rushed out, wheeling a gurney down the ramp toward the doors of the emergency trauma bay.

Andrew was bundled in thermal blankets and hooked up to a portable ventilator, his body temperature dangerously low at 91 degrees Fahrenheit, but his vital signs were steadily climbing under the aggressive care of the flight crew.

Word spread through the hospital corridors like wildfire. Within minutes, Doctor Sarah Vance—the lead physician managing Ashley’s care—was waiting in the trauma suite alongside Marcus and Natalie.

"Severe hypothermia, acute exhaustion, and a mild concussion from hitting his head inside the truck, but structurally, he is going to make a full recovery," the trauma surgeon announced, pulling off his sterile gloves as the nursing staff transferred Andrew to a permanent ICU bed. "It’s a miracle. The only reason he survived the night in water that cold is that the thick canvas jacket trapped a pocket of air, and he managed to wedge himself into a pocket of the debris pile above the waterline just before passing out from exhaustion."

Marcus nodded solemnly. "Sheer paternal willpower. He refused to give up because he knew his little girl was waiting for him."

The following morning, the autumn sunlight streamed brightly through the windows of Ashley’s hospital room. The little girl was sitting up in bed, coloring in a new book provided by the nursing staff, when the door creaked open.

She looked up, expecting to see a nurse or Detective Marcus.

Instead, standing in the doorway, leaning slightly on a wooden cane and wrapped in a warm hospital bathrobe, was her father.

Andrew’s face was pale and sported a thick stubble, but his eyes shone with an overwhelming warmth and fierce love.

"Daddy?" Ashley whispered, dropping her colored pencils.

Andrew’s eyes filled with tears. He dropped the cane, fell to his knees beside her hospital bed, and wrapped his arms around her fragile frame, burying his face in her hair.

"I'm here, sweetie," Andrew choked out, his voice cracking with emotion. "I'm so sorry I took so long. I promised I'd be back in thirty minutes..."

Ashley hugged him back with all the strength her recovering body could muster, burying her face against his shoulder. "I knew you'd come back, Daddy. I kept Buddy safe for you."
