Chapter 3 - Whispers in the Hospital Room

Inside the brightly lit pediatric ward of St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital, the steady, rhythmic beep of a heart monitor provided the only sound in Room 412. Ashley lay beneath a lightweight thermal blanket, an IV line taped securely to the back of her small hand to deliver much-needed fluids and electrolytes.

Beside her pillow rested Buddy, the battered stuffed puppy whose missing ear had been carefully stitched back together years ago by a pair of hands that might never hold him again.

Natalie sat quietly in a vinyl chair beside the bed, watching the gentle rise and fall of the little girl's chest. The doctors had confirmed that Ashley was suffering from severe dehydration, profound fatigue, and mild hypothermia, but her resilience was astonishing. Her system was beginning to stabilize, and the color was slowly returning to her pale cheeks.

A soft knock sounded at the door, and Detective Marcus stepped inside, holding a small plastic evidence bag.

"How is she holding up?" Marcus asked in a whisper, pulling up a chair opposite Natalie.

"She woke up about twenty minutes ago," Natalie murmured, keeping her eyes on the sleeping child. "She asked for her dad. I... I didn't know what to tell her, Marcus. I couldn't break her heart all over again, so I told her that the police were out looking for him and that he loved her very much."

Marcus sighed heavily, placing the evidence bag on the bedside table. Inside the bag was the handwritten grocery list and the reminder note for Monday morning’s medical appointment.

"Did she say anything else about the night he left?" Marcus asked.

"Just fragments," Natalie replied, rubbing her temples. "She remembers hearing the storm howling outside. She remembers her daddy kissing her forehead, putting on his heavy jacket, and telling her to lock the door behind him and not open it for anyone except him or a police officer. She said he promised he'd only be gone thirty minutes because her fever was spiking and she needed her medicine."

Marcus looked down at the floor. "Thirty minutes. That was right before the culvert on Mill Road collapsed under the pressure of the flash flood. If he had left ten minutes earlier or ten minutes later..."

"He would have made it," Natalie finished, her voice choked with emotion. "He was trapped by forces completely beyond his control, and while he was fighting for his life out there in the dark, his own community was tearing his reputation to shreds online."

Suddenly, a soft rustle came from the bed. Ashley’s eyelids fluttered open. Her dark, expressive eyes blinked against the fluorescent light before focusing on Natalie, and then slowly turning toward Marcus.

"Are you the police?" Ashley asked, her voice raspy and fragile.

Marcus gently stood up and stepped closer, lowering himself until he was knee-to-knee with the bed, mirroring the exact posture Natalie had used earlier.

"Yes, Ashley. I'm Detective Vance, and this is Officer Natalie. We're friends. We're doing everything we can to find your daddy. I promise you, we aren't going to stop."

Ashley clutched Buddy tighter against her chest, a single tear escaping down her cheek. "He didn't leave me, mister. My daddy never breaks his promises."
