Noah was seventeen now—taller than me, sporting a messy mop of curls, and deep into coding his own video games on a high-spec rig David had helped him build. The bitterness of the past had long since dissolved into the background of a rich, full life.
On a crisp autumn afternoon, I stood on our back patio with a cup of coffee, watching the golden leaves drift across the green lawn. David came up behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist and resting his chin on my shoulder.
“Penny for your thoughts, CEO,” he whispered, kissing my cheek.
I leaned back into his embrace, smiling as I watched Noah kick a soccer ball across the yard with his friends.
“Just thinking about how lucky we are,” I said softly.
“We made our own luck,” David replied, squeezing me tight.
