Chapter 1 - The Gathering Under Siege

The words hit me like a fist. My mother stood in the center of our backyard, tequila in hand, pork piled high on platters, and twenty relatives laughing around her. She didn't see me slip around the side of the house.
I'm Connor Bradley. I build bridges and skyscrapers. But that day, I couldn't build a wall high enough to block out what I heard: “Your wife is only good for giving birth and washing dishes.”
Frederick's first birthday. I'd left work early, stopping to buy a cake, a gold pendant with his initial, and a blue dress Amy had saved in her browser for weeks. I wanted to surprise her. Instead, I found a party I never authorized.
Every month, I gave my mother three thousand dollars. She said it was for groceries, bills, baby care. She said Amy was resting. But as I peered into the kitchen window, I saw the truth.
Amy sat on a plastic stool, Frederick burning with fever against her chest. With one arm, she held him. With the other, she scrubbed a greasy pot. Between her lips, a dry piece of bread—her only meal all day. Her wrists were thin, her cheeks hollow, her shirt drenched in sweat.
When she saw me, the bread fell. “Connor... your mother said I couldn't stop yet. I still have to serve the coffee.”
I lifted Frederick from her arms. His breath came fast, his eyes glassy. I took her hand. “We're leaving.”
She flinched. “She's going to be angry.”
That fear in her eyes—that was the moment I knew something was deeply wrong. I walked them out the back door, settled them in the car, and called 911. I told them my house was invaded, my wife forced to work, my baby sick. I demanded an ambulance.
Police and paramedics swarmed the yard. My mother burst out, screaming. She shoved an officer. She refused to give her name. Then my cousin Mason tried to sneak out the front door, a folder stuffed under his jacket.
The officers stopped him. Inside the folder: the original deed to my house.

As they handcuffed my mother, still shouting insults at Amy, I understood. This wasn't just a party. It was a cover. A plan to steal everything.
I couldn't believe what was about to happen next.
