Chapter 3 - The Breach

The front door didn't just open; it flew inward with a resounding crash that rattled the picture frames on the hallway walls. Shouts filled the downstairs living area.

“Federal and State Marshal Service! Nobody move! Hands where we can see them!”

I heard Chloe shriek, a high-pitched, indignant sound of utter disbelief. “What is the meaning of this?! Who the hell do you think you are? Julian! Do something!”

Julian’s voice boomed back, laced with panic and righteous indignation. “This is a mistake! We are her legal caregivers! Show me a warrant! You have no right to burst into our home—!”

“Shut your mouth and get on the floor! Face down, hands behind your head, now!” a commanding voice barked back. It belonged to Captain Sarah Vance—no relation, but a long-standing ally of mine in the tactical division.

Upstairs, two armed officers in ballistic vests cleared the hallway, their weapons pointed low. When they reached the guest bathroom door, I unlocked it slowly and stepped out into the light, holding my state identification badge out before me.

“Assistant Attorney General Elena Vance. The victim is inside, safe and secure,” I said, my voice steady and cold.

The lead officer nodded, signaling for a female medic to enter the bathroom immediately. “Copy that, Counselor. Medical team is moving in. The perimeter is secure downstairs. The suspects are detained.”

I stepped back inside as the medic gently assessed my mother, wrapping her in a thermal foil blanket and gently lifting her into a specialized transport chair. As they wheeled her out of the room and down the stairs, I walked closely beside her, holding her hand.

When we reached the ground floor, the scene was chaotic. Julian and Chloe were pinned face-down on the hardwood floor, plastic zip-ties biting tightly into their wrists.

As they hauled Julian up, his face twisted in rage when he caught sight of me standing beside the stretcher.

“Elena?!” he screamed, straining against the deputies holding his arms. “You bitch! What have you done?! This is our house! She gave it to us! She’s senile! She doesn’t know what she’s saying!”

Chloe glared at me with pure venom, her expensive diamond earrings catching the harsh porch lights as deputies escorted them toward separate cruisers. “You’ll pay for this! We’ll sue you into oblivion! You ruined everything!”

I didn’t blink. I didn’t raise my voice. I simply looked Julian dead in the eye and said, “You picked the wrong victim, and you picked the wrong sister.”
