Chapter 10 - A New Dawn


A year after that fateful birthday visit, my mother’s seventy-ninth birthday arrived under entirely different circumstances.
There were no locked doors, no drawn curtains, no hidden terror, and no forced smiles. Instead, the house was filled with the bright, cheerful laughter of lifelong friends, trusted neighbors, and extended family members who genuinely loved and cherished her.
As Mom blew out the candles on her birthday cake—a magnificent creation frosted in vanilla and fresh strawberries—she looked around the room, her eyes shining with tears of pure joy rather than sorrow.
“Make a wish, Mom,” I whispered, standing right beside her chair with my arm wrapped securely around her shoulders.
She closed her eyes for a brief moment, smiled peacefully, and blew out every single candle in one steady breath.
The applause in the room was deafening, a chorus of celebration for a woman who had survived the worst darkness imaginable and emerged stronger, brighter, and more beloved than ever before.
