Chapter 6 - The Judge's Hammer

The courtroom was so quiet you could hear the hum of the overhead ventilation system. Judge Sterling scrolled past the financial statements, his lips pursed into a thin, disapproving line. He looked up from his monitor and stared down at the defense table.

"Mrs. Ward," Judge Sterling’s voice cut through the stillness like a scalpel. "You have submitted a motion for bond based on medical necessity and lack of direct evidence. Have you had a chance to review the state's Exhibit A—the audio transcript from the victim's toy?"

Evelyn lifted her chin, maintaining an air of haughty defiance. "I have not seen any legitimate evidence, Your Honor. My son has conspired with disgruntled medical staff to fabricate electronic files in order to seize family assets. It is a malicious fabrication."

Judge Sterling didn't blink. He pressed a button on his console, and the courtroom audio system crackled to life.

The tinny, unmistakable voice of Evelyn echoed through the walnut-paneled room:

"Drink it, you little brat. Your mother is too weak to protect you... If you don't finish this soup, I'll throw your precious doll in the incinerator."

The recording played through the climax—Lily’s cries, Clara’s desperate gasps, and Evelyn’s cold command to finish the poison. When the audio finally cut off, the silence in the courtroom felt suffocating.

Evelyn’s composure finally cracked. Her face twitched, and her hands gripped the edge of the mahogany defense table so hard her knuckles turned white.

Daniel looked as though he might be sick, whispering frantically to his lawyer, "Get me a plea deal. Now."

"Fabricated, Mrs. Ward?" Judge Sterling asked softly, leaning forward over his bench. "That is the voice of a woman orchestrating the slow murder of a child and her mother. It matches your voice print, it matches the timestamps of the bank transfers, and it matches the chemical residue found on the victims' clothing."

He picked up his wooden gavel.

"Given the severity of the charges, the overwhelming forensic and electronic evidence, the clear existence of flight preparation, and the immediate threat to public safety, the motion for bond is denied. Both defendants will be held at the county correctional facility without bail pending trial."

Thud.

The gavel struck the sounding block, echoing like a gunshot through the room.

"This court is adjourned."

As the bailiffs moved in behind Evelyn and Daniel, snapping cuffs onto their wrists, Evelyn turned her head one last time toward me. Her eyes were no longer calculating; they were filled with a desperate, venomous hatred.

"You'll ruin everything, Michael!" she hissed as she was pulled away toward the holding cells. "Without me, you're nothing! You'll lose it all!"

May you like

"I already lost three days of my life believing you were family," I answered, my voice steady and cold. "That was the last time."

As they were led out through the side doors, Sarah placed a hand on my arm. "It's done for today, Michael. Let's go home. Clara and Lily are waiting."
