Chapter 5 - The Gathering Storm in Courtship Hall

The county courthouse was a monolithic structure of gray granite and towering columns that cast long, cold shadows across the steps. By nine-thirty on a crisp Tuesday morning, media vans were already parked along the curb, their satellite dishes pointed toward the entrance like mechanical sunflowers seeking scandal. Word had leaked about the high-profile corporate executive whose mother and brother had allegedly poisoned his family for an inheritance.
I pulled my car into the secured underground parking lot reserved for witnesses and plaintiffs, flanked by my legal counsel, Sarah Vance—a formidable attorney known for dismantling corporate and familial fraud cases with surgical precision.
"Are you ready for this, Michael?" Sarah asked, adjusting her briefcase strap as the car came to a stop. "Evelyn’s defense team is going to try and turn this into a messy domestic dispute to avoid federal asset forfeiture. They'll paint her as a confused matriarch and Daniel as an unwitting bystander."
"They can paint whatever picture they want," I replied, stepping out into the chilly subterranean air. "The digital logs, the chemical purchase registry, and the forged transfer deeds don't care about their narrative."
As we walked through the secure checkpoint and into the corridor outside Courtroom 3B, I saw them.
Evelyn sat at the defense table, wearing a pristine gray wool coat that projected an image of dignified innocence. Her silver hair was meticulously styled, and she kept her hands folded neatly in her lap. Beside her, Daniel looked sweating and restless, constantly shifting in his seat and whispering frantically to his court-appointed public defender.
When the heavy oak doors opened and we stepped inside, Evelyn turned her head. Her eyes locked onto mine. There was no remorse in them—only a cold, piercing calculation, as if she were evaluating where her investment had failed.
"All rise for the Honorable Judge Marcus Sterling," the bailiff announced.
Judge Sterling entered, a stern-faced man with decades on the bench who had zero tolerance for theatrical nonsense. He sat down, adjusted his glasses, and reviewed the docket.
"We are here for the arraignment and bond review in the matter of The State versus Evelyn Ward and Daniel Ward," Judge Sterling read, his deep voice echoing through the silent courtroom. "The charges include attempted aggravated murder in the first degree, conspiracy to commit murder, grand larceny, and child endangerment. How do the defendants plead?"
Evelyn’s lawyer stood up immediately. "Not guilty, Your Honor. Furthermore, we move for immediate dismissal of the murder and conspiracy charges due to lack of direct physical eyewitness testimony linking my clients to the administration of any toxic substance, and request a reasonable bond for medical reasons."
Sarah Vance stood up beside me before Judge Sterling could even respond.
"Objection, Your Honor," Sarah said smoothly, stepping up to the podium. "The state presents overwhelming electronic and documentary evidence that bypasses the need for eyewitness testimony."
Sarah motioned to the court clerk, who transmitted a digital file directly to the judge’s bench terminal.
"Exhibit A," Sarah continued, her voice clear and commanding. "Audio logs recovered from an encrypted ambient recording device integrated into the victim’s toy, capturing Evelyn Ward explicitly coercing a six-year-old child into consuming chemical toxins while holding the mother incapacitated. Exhibit B: Certified agricultural procurement records showing Evelyn Ward purchasing restricted industrial pesticide four days prior, signed with her own driver's license ID. Exhibit C: Forged medical power of attorney documents and eighty-four thousand dollars in unauthorized wire transfers seized from Daniel Ward’s personal apartment."

A murmur rippled through the gallery. Daniel slumped further into his chair, burying his face in his hands as his public defender hastily flipped through the newly submitted evidence packet with wide eyes.
Judge Sterling scrolled through the documents on his screen, his expression growing darker with every page. He paused on the transcript of Miss Button’s audio log, his gaze lifting to fix directly on Evelyn.
