Chapter 7 - The First Meal

The transition from the freezing concrete of the alleyway into the warm, illuminated sanctuary of the Vance penthouse felt to Lily like stepping onto another planet. Every surface gleamed under soft recessed lighting, and the scent of roasting herbs and warm bread filled her senses, making her stomach emit a loud, embarrassing rumble that echoed off the marble walls.

Leo wheeled himself forward from the living room area in a sleek motorized chair, his face lighting up with a brilliant, welcoming grin.

"You came!" Leo said, wheeling over to stop a few feet away so as not to overwhelm her. "Hey, Lily."

Lily froze just inside the foyer, clutching the new fleece jacket Ethan had given her tightly around her shoulders. She looked down at her dirt-smudged sneakers standing on the pristine white marble, terrified that at any second someone would shout at her to get out.

"Don't worry about the floor, Lily," Ethan said gently, closing the heavy oak door behind them and locking out the cold. "Arthur, could you have Mrs. Higgins prepare the guest suite on the second tier? And bring up the warm soup and dinner spread immediately."

"Right away, Mr. Vance," Arthur replied, offering Lily a warm, crinkled smile that crinkled the corners of his eyes before he stepped quietly toward the kitchen corridor.

Ethan guided Lily toward the dining table, where a magnificent spread of food sat waiting. There was no formal ceremony, no awkward questioning — just a warm bowl of chicken noodle soup, crusty golden bread, and a plate of roasted vegetables.

"You can eat as much as you want," Ethan said, pulling out a chair for her. "No one is going to take it away. No one is going to rush you."

Lily sat down slowly, her movements jerky and cautious, like a wild bird landing near a feeder. For a few seconds, she just stared at the steaming bowl, inhaling the rich, comforting steam. Then, lifting the heavy silver spoon with trembling fingers, she took a sip.

The warmth hit her throat, spreading outward through her entire body, driving away the three weeks of biting chill that had settled deep into her bones. A single tear slipped down her cheek, cutting a clean path through the dirt on her face, but she didn't bother to wipe it away. She began to eat, slowly at first, then with a desperate, quiet hunger that brought a lump to Ethan's throat.

Leo watched her quietly, resting his chin on his hands. "You saved my life yesterday, Lily. If you hadn't given me your coat... I don't think the paramedics would have found me in time before the temperature dropped below freezing."

Lily paused, her spoon hovering over the bowl. She looked up at Leo, her dark eyes wide and serious. "You would've died," she said simply, stating a raw fact. "The old man under the bridge said the cold takes people when they sleep. You were sleeping."

"I was," Leo agreed softly. "And you traded your only coat to keep me alive. Why did you do it? You didn't even know me."

Lily looked down at her bowl, her fingers tightening around the handle of the spoon. "I know what it's like to be cold," she whispered, her voice barely louder than a whisper. "I know what it's like when nobody cares if you wake up or not. I didn't want... I didn't want anyone else to feel like that."

The dining room fell completely silent. Ethan stood behind Lily's chair, placing a gentle, protective hand on her thin shoulder. In that moment, all the wealth, power, and status he had accumulated over a lifetime felt utterly insignificant compared to the immense heart of this homeless child.
