Chapter 10 - Forever Home

The evening sun dipped below the Manhattan skyline, painting the sky in breathtaking shades of amber, violet, and deep rose.
Inside the penthouse on Fifth Avenue, the dining table was set not for a formal corporate gathering, but for a family celebration. The rich aroma of roasted turkey, mashed potatoes, and homemade apple pie filled the air, mingling with the sound of laughter and upbeat music playing softly from the living room speakers.
Mrs. Higgins, the longtime head housekeeper, bustled out of the kitchen carrying a massive platter of food, beaming from ear to ear as she set it down. "There we are! Special dinner for a very special young lady."
"Thank you, Mrs. Higgins," Lily said brightly, hopping down from her seat and helping arrange the silverware with practiced ease.
She wasn't the timid, shivering ghost who had cowered behind the service door six months ago. She walked with a light, confident step, her posture straight, her heart full of a quiet, unshakable peace.
Leo rolled his eyes playfully as he reached for a roll. "Don't spoil her too much, Mrs. Higgins, or she'll start bossing me around like she already does during our chess matches."
"Somebody has to keep you on your toes, Leo," Arthur Pendelton chuckled from the end of the table, raising his glass of sparkling cider with a warm grin.
Ethan sat at the head of the table, looking around at the bright, joyful faces gathered in his home. He thought back to that freezing night under the General Sherman Monument—to the terror of almost losing his son, and the miraculous, ragged little girl who had emerged from the dark to save everything he held dear.
He raised his glass, catching Lily’s eye across the table. She smiled back, her dark eyes shining with absolute security and love.
"To new beginnings," Ethan said, his voice ringing out clear and steady through the warm room. "And to finding family in the places we least expect."

"To family," everyone echoed warmly around the table.
Lily raised her glass, taking a sip of the sweet sparkling cider. Outside the towering glass windows, the lights of New York City twinkled like a million friendly stars, no longer a cold labyrinth of shadows, but a vast, beautiful world where she finally belonged.
