Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Conspiracy
The forensic analysis of Clara's phone provided the definitive evidence needed to break the case wide open.
The device contained a hidden, cloud-synced video recording filmed from behind a bookshelf in our bedroom. It captured the final moments of Clara's life with terrifying clarity.
The video revealed that my mother, Teresa, had confronted Clara demanding the return of the financial ledgers. When Clara refused, Derek physically restrained her. During the struggle, Derek threw Clara against the heavy oak bedpost—the impact causing a fatal head injury.
Instead of calling an ambulance, my mother and Aunt Beatrice panicked. To cover up the accidental killing, Beatrice arranged for a lethal dose of sedatives to be injected post-mortem to stage the scene as a suicide, leveraging her connection with the corrupt coroner, Dr. Evans.
With this video evidence, the district attorney filed formal charges against all parties involved.
The court proceedings began three weeks later at the county courthouse. The trial gripped the entire town of Silver Creek, exposing the deep corruption underlying one of the region's most prominent families.
I sat in the front row of the gallery, holding Lily's small hand, as the prosecutor presented the evidence.
My mother sat at the defense table, wearing an orange jumpsuit, looking frail and aged. Next to her was Derek, his head bowed, unable to meet my gaze throughout the entire proceeding. Aunt Beatrice and Dr. Evans were also present, facing multiple felony counts of conspiracy, tampering with evidence, and obstructing justice.
When the prosecutor played Clara's final video recording for the jury, a collective gasp echoed through the courtroom. My mother covered her face with her hands, sobbing uncontrollably, while Derek slumped in his chair.
The jury took less than three hours to deliberate.
The verdict was unanimous:
Derek Sterling: Guilty of involuntary manslaughter, destruction of evidence, and criminal conspiracy. Sentenced to 25 years in state prison.
Teresa Sterling: Guilty of accomplice to manslaughter, obstruction of justice, and financial fraud. Sentenced to 18 years in prison.
Beatrice Sterling & Dr. Evans: Guilty of tampering with evidence and falsifying medical records. Sentenced to 10 years each.
Mr. Vance: Guilty of racketeering, federal money laundering, and attempted murder. Sentenced to life without parole.
As the officers led my mother away in handcuffs, she turned to look at me one last time, her eyes pleading for forgiveness.
"Alex... please," she whispered. "I did it to protect the house... to protect our family's legacy..."
